He heard the screaming before he saw them. The ghosts that hung around were more violent than normal. They floated around him, snarling at him in a strange mix of fear, anger and admiration. The people in front of him writhed in agony. He knew he had to help them but did not know the cost.
He knew the magic needed to save them would be old and powerful. Magic like that was old and powerful. If he wanted this spell to succeed, magic like this would cost an arm and a leg. And he hated that. He hated the fact that to help them he would have to give up a vital part of himself.
A spirit lunged for him. He lurched as he realized this one was new. The energy around it wasn't as strong nor old as the others that followed it. Magnus winced as he heard the screams intensify. Whatever that stupid human had tried to do it had gone very wrong. He had warned the fool when he set out on this stupid mission. He warned the idiot not to mess with the old Magiks. Sean Vercussy knew that the cost would be significant and he had said as much to that idiot, Robert. But did he listen? No. And now he was dealing with the consequences of his actions.
The screaming grew in intensity almost as if they were begging him to come to help them. He winced again as he realized not only had they grown louder more voices had joined the fray. He knew that the more he thought about it, the more souls would join. He knew this wasn't his mess to clean up he wasn't sure he could clean it up. Maybe his screams would soon join theirs. But he knew he couldn't leave them like this. So, taking a deep breath Magnus flared his magic, possibly for the last time.
