The path from my dormitory to the mountains felt almost like second nature, so familiar that I could traverse it with my eyes closed. Each step felt reassuring beneath my feet, a rhythm I had come to know well over the past few months. The moon hung high above, casting its silver light over the landscape, and my mind buzzed with anticipation for the night's training.
Tonight would be different—I could feel it thrumming through me like a storm brewing on the horizon. But as I approached the cliff face where the rocky trail split off, a nagging sensation crept over me. I wasn't alone.
My steps slowed, breath catching in my chest as I strained to hear past the soft rustle of leaves. A glance back toward the dormitory revealed figures emerging from the shadows. My heart sank when I recognized my friends.
"You really thought we wouldn't notice?" Ember called out, a small smile playing on her lips as she crossed her arms.
I let out a long sigh, a mix of guilt and dread weighing heavy on my chest. They had been my closest allies for months, and yet I had tried so hard to keep them from this part of my life—the secrets of the rebellion. I'd wanted to protect them, shield them from the dangers I faced.
"Does Orion know you're following me?" I whispered, a hint of worry creeping into my voice. If the rebellion thought I was betraying them, everything could come crashing down.
Valen shook his head slowly, the seriousness in his demeanor causing my stomach to twist. "No one knows, Aella. Just us."
"And what we want," Kaelen interjected, his blue eyes searching mine, "is for you to tell us the truth."
My heart raced. I could hear the sincerity in his voice, feel the weight of their expectations pressing down on me. This was my chance to come clean, to let them in on everything—the rebellion's work and my own painful secrets. They had kept my confidences before; maybe they could handle this one too.
"Fine," I said quietly after a long pause. "You've already followed me this far... You might as well know the whole truth."
Relief flickered across Ember's face, and Valen's expression turned resolute. It was as if they had already decided to stand by me, no matter what it cost. I hesitated only a moment longer before gesturing for them to follow me.
Once we reached the hidden clearing where the rebellion's base was carved into the mountainside, I took a steadying breath, gathering my thoughts. I turned to face my friends, who looked around in amazement. Ember's gaze caught on the intricate carvings etched into the stone, symbols of ancient power intertwined with warnings written in languages long forgotten.
"Why are there symbols of the Rebellion?" Ember asked, her voice barely above a whisper, her eyes wide with shock.
"This is where the rebellion trains... and where we plan," I replied, bracing myself for their reactions.
Valen's expression shifted from awe to disbelief. "You're telling us you're part of this? Aella, why didn't you say anything?"
"I didn't want to put you in danger," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "The System doesn't just control our cities or make decisions about where we live. They control us—our abilities, the elements we're supposed to wield. And they've been doing it for generations."
A heavy silence settled over us, the weight of my revelation sinking in. Ember shook her head, struggling to process it all. "You mean... we've been living under their thumb all this time?"
"Exactly," I affirmed, my heart racing. "But there's hope. We're fighting back. We can take control of our own destinies."
"Think about it," I continued, urgency creeping into my tone. "We're separated into realms according to our element, never allowed to visit family or friends if they belong to a different one. That's no coincidence. They want us divided, easier to manipulate and keep in line."
