"You okay baby?". Ada asked, seeing the tears that had dried on Cedar's reddened face when she and Miguel walked back outside.
"I am now". Cedar replied quietly, sitting between the couple as Boone spied the jacket around her waist. "Where did you find that?".
"It was on the floor back there". Cedar replied, hooking her thumb at the inside of the prison. "I'm gonna fix it up and give it to uncle Iggy".
Boone looked at his older brother in amusement. "You got upgraded fast didn't you?".
Miguel put his hands up in mock surrender. "Her idea, not mine".
Ada looked up at the darkening sky. "We should get some rest".
"Where are we gonna sleep?". Cedar asked, now thinking of what their sleeping situations would look like.
"The bunks in the cells look pretty decent still". Boone replied simply, taking the nearest cell for himself.
Cedar hesitated with taking the next one, she really didn't wanna be on her own but she also didn't wanna be any more burdensome than she was already being.
Sensing his honorary niece's hesitation, Miguel knelt next to her. "Tell ya what, you and Ada take the bunk and I'll drag one of the extra mattress's in".
"Are you sure?". Cedar asked nervously.
"Yes, now go get some sleep". Miguel instructed, his voice soft but leaving no room for further argument.
Ten minutes later the small, dysfunctional family were safely in their respective beds, hoping to get some semblance of a decent rest.
It was around dawn that Cedar awoke with a gasp, her shaky body covered in a thin layer of sweat despite the chilly morning air.
Without waking the other's, she eased herself out of the bottom bunk and sat on the prison steps, watching a herd of walkers pressing against the chain link fencing in their effort to get in.
The sun was halfway in the sky by the time Miguel had woken up, walking outside and seeing the teen girl on the steps with her head tucked atop her knees.
"Hey". He called out softly, alerting her of his presence as he sat down next to her.
"Hi". Cedar whispered, looking at him from the corner of her eye.
"I didn't hear you get up". Miguel stated softly. "You okay?".
Cedar nodded. "Yeah, just a bad dream".
Miguel nodded in understanding. "I get them too". He then looked down, seeing how Cedar was fervently rubbing at her left wrist. "What's wrong?".
Cedar stopped rubbing her arm at once. "Nothing".
Not buying it for a moment, Miguel grabbed her wrist and pulled her sleeve back to reveal a red tinged bite mark. "What is this?".
Cedar sniffed. "It's a bite mark from an infected".
"When did this happen?". Miguel asked calmly.
"Like five years ago". Cedar whispered, seeing that Miguel was still talking to her calmly and not reaching for his gun.
"Are you immune?". The older man asked, his tone conveying shock and awe.
"You can't tell anyone". Cedar pleaded. "Uncle Iggy please, you know what Boone will do".
"He's not gonna shoot you if that's what you're worried about". Miguel replied, still looking at Cedar's bite wearily.
Cedar raised a brow. "But -".
"Let me guess, he gave you the do exactly what I say or you won't like the consequences speech?". Miguel cut in with a smirk.
Cedar nodded in confirmation as Miguel laughed. "It's just a scare tactic kid, he won't hurt you".
"He tried shooting you two days ago". Cedar replied bluntly.
"Well me, he'll gladly shoot at the drop of a hat, that's why I took this from him when we were sleeping". Miguel said, holding up Boone's pistol.
Cedar laughed as Boone suddenly stomped outside whilst glaring at his old brother. "Give me my pistol!".
Miguel smirked and bounded off the steps and into the tall grass. "Come and get it!".
Boone narrowed his eyes and let out a groan as he promptly took after his older brother, trying to get his weapon back.
"Guys don't play keep away with a loaded weapon!". Ada called out, running a hand over her face as she watched both grown men doing exactly that.
