Jeonghan found a moment of peace, or at least the closest semblance of it he had felt in Seongcheol's mansion. The soft rustle of leaves from the garden, the gentle hum of distant water fountains, and the faint fragrance of blooming flowers temporarily calmed his chaotic thoughts. Scoups had allowed him limited freedom, a rare mercy that included access to the library. Books had always been Jeonghan's comfort, his escape from the harshness of the world and now, he hoped, a distraction from the twisted trap he was ensnared in.
After wandering the vast halls for what felt like ages, he encountered an elderly man sweeping the garden path. Though his wrinkled face was lined with years of service and a worn resignation, his eyes held a warmth that comforted Jeonghan.
"Excuse me, sir," Jeonghan said softly. "Could you guide me to the library?"
The old man looked at him carefully before nodding. "Of course, young master," he replied, his tone formal yet gentle. He led Jeonghan down a series of dimly lit corridors until they reached an immense wooden door with ornate carvings. With a final glance over his shoulder, he pushed the door open, revealing the library's vast, shadowed interior.
As soon as they stepped inside, the old man's demeanor shifted. His hands trembled as he quickly shut the heavy door, and his face turned pale with worry. "You shouldn't be here, young master," he whispered, his voice laced with an urgency that sent a chill down Jeonghan's spine.
Jeonghan blinked, confused. "What do you mean?"
The old man took a shaky breath, his gaze darting around as if he feared the very walls were watching. "You need to escape this place, Jeonghan. Run, while you still have the chance." His eyes glistened with a deep-seated fear as he spoke. "Seongcheol... he will trap you in his darkness forever."
Jeonghan felt his pulse quicken, heart pounding as he listened, trying to make sense of the old man's warning. "Why...why are you telling me this? Aren't you afraid?"
The man's face softened, filled with a strange tenderness. "Because you remind me of my own son," he whispered. "You are young, innocent, and you do not deserve the fate that Seongcheol plans for you." He cast another quick, fearful look toward the door. "You don't understand who he truly is...what he's capable of."
"What are you talking about?" Jeonghan's voice was shaky now, every instinct urging him to listen yet part of him wanting to deny it. "Why are you going against him if you know the risk?"
The old man swallowed hard. "Because I have seen things, things that will haunt you if you don't escape. Seongcheol was never like the others; he was obsessed with power, with perfection, and anyone who stands in his way is destroyed." He looked down, clenching his hands together as he continued. "He orchestrated his own parents' deaths to take control of the family. He's driven by an insatiable need for control, for possession, and nothing, no one will escape him once he's made up his mind."
Jeonghan's stomach dropped as the man's words sank in. The reality of the trap closing around him felt palpable, as if the walls themselves were pressing in on him. His hands began to shake. "I can't...I can't let anything happen to my friends," he whispered, barely audible. "They're my family, I would die without them." The thought of Joshua and Seokmin being caught in Seongcheol's dark web felt like a dagger twisting in his chest.
The old man nodded solemnly. "That's exactly what he'll use to keep you here. He wants to make you depend on him, to see him as the only one who can protect you. He'll isolate you from everyone you love, slowly cutting away every connection you have until he's the only one left."
The depth of Seongcheol's obsession was terrifying, yet what truly unnerved Jeonghan was the thought of losing Joshua and Seokmin. "How...how are you even telling me all this?" Jeonghan asked, voice thick with desperation. "You said he doesn't let anyone live who knows too much about him."
The old man's face softened. "Because you are worth the risk," he whispered. "But remember, there's nowhere to hide here. The entire city is under his control, and in this mansion, his ears are everywhere."
But as they both stood there, they had forgotten one crucial truth: Seongcheol was omnipresent. Even now, his eyes and ears filled the mansion. In the shadows, hidden devices picked up every desperate word, capturing the old man's betrayal and Jeonghan's desperation.
That evening, when Jeonghan returned to his room, a sense of unease gnawed at him, growing with each passing hour. It was as if the very walls were closing in on him, trapping him in an invisible cage.
Suddenly, a knock echoed through the silent room, and the door swung open. Seongcheol stepped in, his face shadowed and his eyes dark with fury. Jeonghan froze as Seongcheol's lips curved into a chilling smile that sent shivers down his spine.
"So," Seongcheol said softly, his voice dripping with malice. "You've made a new friend."
The horror of realization dawned upon Jeonghan. Somehow, Seongcheol knew everything.
Without another word, Seongcheol led Jeonghan back to the library, where the old man stood, his face pale as death. In a voice that was almost gentle, Seongcheol spoke, his words laced with a sinister calm. "You thought you could turn my precious Jeonghan against me?"
The old man's face crumbled in fear. But there was no escaping the wrath of Seongcheol. In the heart of the library, he unleashed a fury that left Jeonghan paralyzed, forced to watch as the one person who had tried to protect him was made an example of.
When it was over, Seongcheol turned to Jeonghan, brushing a hand over his trembling shoulder. "Let this be a lesson, love," he whispered. "No one can come between us. Not even you."
