Alina woke to the sounds of dawn breaking outside the window, the sunlight filtering weakly through the trees. The warmth of Damon’s presence lingered, even though he was already gone. She could feel the space he had occupied, the darkness he had left behind.
As she sat up, her thoughts drifted back to the promise she had made him last night. No matter what happens, I’ll stay. She wasn’t sure if she had said it for him or for herself, but she felt the weight of those words now, the reality of what it meant.
Before she could dwell on it, a sudden, intense chill swept through the room. She wrapped the blanket tightly around her shoulders, glancing around the old, empty estate. A strange feeling washed over her—a sense that they weren’t alone.
Alina stepped into the hallway, her footsteps echoing through the silence as she made her way toward the main hall. She could feel the presence, dark and heavy, following her every step. She reached the doorway, her pulse quickening as she looked into the shadows.
And then, she saw him.
The man from her dream—the one who had appeared at her door and warned her to leave. He stood in the shadows, his expression unreadable, his eyes as dark as midnight.
“Why are you here?” Alina demanded, her voice trembling.
The man’s lips twisted into a cold smile. “You think you’re safe here? That he can protect you?”
Alina’s fists clenched at her sides. “You don’t know anything about him.”
“Oh, I know more than you realize,” he said, his voice low and menacing. “Damon thinks he can control his curse, but he’s only delaying the inevitable. He’s cursed to destroy everything he cares about… including you.”
The words hit her like a physical blow, and for a moment, she couldn’t breathe. But then she remembered Damon’s face, the promise she had seen in his eyes. She wouldn’t let this stranger undermine that.
“You’re lying,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.
The man’s smile widened, his eyes gleaming with a dark satisfaction. “Believe what you want, but you’ll see soon enough. And when you do, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Before Alina could respond, the man vanished, leaving her standing alone in the cold, empty hall. A shiver ran down her spine as his words echoed in her mind. Cursed to destroy everything he cares about.
She shook her head, forcing the doubt from her mind. She had made her choice. She had chosen to stand by Damon, no matter what. And she wasn’t going to let a stranger’s warning shake her resolve.

That Evening
Damon returned as the sun began to set, his expression dark and tense. Alina could see the weight of something heavy in his gaze, as if he were carrying a burden too great to bear. She wanted to reach out, to offer him some comfort, but she wasn’t sure if he would let her.
“Did someone come here?” Damon asked, his voice quiet but edged with tension.
Alina hesitated, her mind racing. She hadn’t told him about the stranger’s visit, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Damon already knew. “Yes,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “A man. He said… he said you were cursed to destroy everything you care about.”
Damon’s jaw tightened, his gaze hardening. “And you believe him?”
Alina shook her head. “No. But I don’t understand. Why would he say that? Why would he come here?”
Damon looked away, his hands clenched at his sides. “Because he wants to break you. He knows that if he can plant doubt in your mind, he can weaken me.”
“Who is he?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Why is he after you?”
Damon hesitated, his gaze distant. “He’s part of the curse. A shadow, a remnant of my past that refuses to let me go.”
Alina’s heart pounded in her chest. She wanted to ask more, to demand answers, but she could see the pain in Damon’s eyes, the weight of a history he wasn’t ready to share.
“I won’t let him come between us,” she said softly, her hand reaching out to rest on his arm. “Whatever this is, whatever he’s trying to do, I won’t let him win.”
Damon’s gaze softened, and for a moment, she thought she saw a flicker of hope in his eyes. But then his expression hardened again, his jaw clenching as he pulled away.
“You don’t understand, Alina,” he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. “This curse… it’s not just mine to bear. It’s yours too, now.”
Alina’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat. She had known the risks, known the darkness that came with loving Damon. But hearing him say it out loud made it feel more real, more dangerous.
“Then we’ll bear it together,” she whispered, her voice steady.
Damon looked at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and gratitude. And for the first time, Alina saw the truth in his gaze—the depth of his love for her, the fear that came with it, and the curse that had bound them together.
Without a word, he pulled her into his arms, his hold fierce and desperate, as if he were trying to shield her from the world. And in that moment, Alina knew that no matter what came next, she was ready to face it by his side.
