The night was thick with silence, the air heavy as if the forest itself held its breath. Alina lay in bed, listening to the faint sounds outside her window, but sleep wouldn’t come. Damon’s words replayed in her mind, each one a reminder of the choice she had made. She had promised to stay, to face whatever darkness followed him, but she hadn’t expected it to close in so soon.
A cold breeze slipped through the open window, making her shiver. The room felt different, almost as though she weren’t alone. She sat up, glancing toward the door, half expecting to see Damon there, but the hallway was empty.
As her gaze drifted to the corner of the room, a shadow moved, barely visible in the dim light. Her heart raced, her pulse quickening as she strained to see through the darkness. A figure stepped forward, emerging from the shadows—a tall, familiar form, his eyes as dark as the night itself.
It was him. The man from before. The stranger who had warned her to leave.
“You don’t listen very well, do you?” His voice was cold, mocking, his eyes gleaming with a malicious glint. “I told you this wouldn’t end well for you.”
Alina’s throat tightened, her mind racing. She wanted to scream, to call for Damon, but she felt frozen, trapped in the stranger’s gaze.
“Why are you doing this?” she managed to whisper, her voice barely audible.
The man’s lips curled into a sinister smile. “Because you’re his weakness. The one thing he cares about in this world. And that makes you valuable to me.”
Alina swallowed hard, her pulse hammering in her ears. “I won’t let you hurt him.”
The man laughed, a cold, hollow sound that sent a chill down her spine. “Oh, I don’t need to hurt him, Alina. All I have to do is hurt you. And he’ll destroy himself.”
Before she could react, he stepped forward, his hand reaching out. Alina felt a sudden surge of pain, a darkness pressing down on her, suffocating her. Her vision blurred, and she felt herself slipping, her strength draining away as the shadow consumed her.
And then, just as suddenly, it stopped.
The door burst open, and Damon appeared, his face a mask of fury. He crossed the room in a flash, his gaze locking onto the stranger.
“Get away from her,” Damon growled, his voice low and dangerous.
The stranger’s smile faded, his gaze narrowing. “Ah, Damon. Just in time.”
Damon moved between Alina and the stranger, his stance protective, his entire body tense. “You don’t belong here. Leave her out of this.”
The man laughed, his gaze flickering between Damon and Alina. “You think you can protect her? You can’t even protect yourself.”
Damon’s expression darkened, his fists clenched at his sides. “If you touch her again, I’ll make you regret it.”
The stranger’s smile widened, a hint of challenge in his eyes. “We’ll see about that.” With a final, mocking glance at Alina, he vanished, leaving a lingering chill in the air.
Alina slumped back, her entire body trembling. She looked up at Damon, her gaze filled with questions, with fear.
“Who is he?” she whispered, her voice shaking. “What does he want from us?”
Damon’s expression softened, a trace of guilt flickering across his face. “He’s a part of my past. A piece of the curse that I thought I’d left behind. But he’s found a way back.”
Alina swallowed, her mind reeling. She felt the weight of Damon’s words, the reality of the danger she was now a part of. “And he’s after me… because of you.”
Damon nodded, his jaw clenched. “He knows you’re my weakness, Alina. The one thing he can use to hurt me.”
She reached out, her hand trembling as it touched his arm. “Then teach me. Teach me how to fight him.”
Damon’s gaze darkened, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and admiration. “You’re stronger than I ever imagined, Alina. But this isn’t a battle you can fight alone.”
“Then don’t make me fight it alone,” she whispered, her gaze steady. “I’m not afraid of the darkness, Damon. Not as long as you’re with me.”
For a moment, Damon looked at her, his expression unreadable. Then he pulled her into his arms, his embrace fierce, almost desperate. “I’ll protect you, Alina. Whatever it takes.”
They stayed like that, wrapped in each other’s arms, as the darkness settled around them. Alina knew they were facing something far greater than they had imagined, something ancient and powerful. But she also knew that as long as Damon was by her side, she would face it head-on.
