The next morning, you and Kate wake up early. Kate is rushing around the house, stressing. By seven, you are ready to leave.
"So, where is this place exactly?" You ask.
"I'm not too sure, but it's further out from here," Kate says as she keeps her eyes on the road.
"But we aren't heading there straight away. We have to go say goodbye to a couple of people," Kate says.
A smile spreads onto your face as you think about the kind people you would get to see until you remember it would be the last time. Your first stop is Mr Powell's convenience store. You both hop out of the car and enter the store.
You walk in to see the old man walk out of the back. He must have been setting everything up as the store only opened barely twenty minutes ago.
"Ah. My favourite customers. How may I help?" Mr Powell says as he stands behind the cash register. You and Kate walk up, stopping to stand across from him.
"Well, we are leaving today," Kate says with a small smile.
"Ah, yes. The new job." Mr Powell says, looking at the two of you. Kate nods with a smile.
"Well, I won't keep you long. Pick out anything. It's on the house." Mr Powell says as he leans against the checkout conveyor belt.
"Oh, no, Mr Powell. It's fine-"
"No, please. Pick out anything. It's going to be a long drive. You'll need something." Mr Powell cuts Kate off as he insists on his offer.
Kate looks down at you as Mr Powell does the same with a small nod of approval. As you rush off, Kate's smile reappears, and she turns back to Mr Powell. "Thank you."
Mr Powell simply waves his hand in a reassuring dismissal.
"No, really. I don't know what we would do without you." Kate smiles.
The two's conversation fades slightly as you walk further away. Your eyes scan the shelves for anything that piques your interest. You pick up a bag of (favourite chips) before moving on to pick out some candy. You pick (favourite candy) for yourself and peanut butter M&M's for Kate as they are her favourite. After grabbing some bottled water, you run back to the checkout, where Kate and Mr. Powell are still talking until the sudden squeak of your shoes makes them stop and turn to you.
"Wow. Some good choices in here." Mr Powell says as he picks up (favourite candy), smiling at you, knowing it's your favourite. You smile, and you hear Kate chuckle slightly next to you.
Mr Powell finishes bagging everything, not bothering to scan any of it as it was on the house.
"Well, you two have safe travels and come visit. As much as possible!" Mr Powell says with a smile as he hands you the paper bag.
"Thank you, Mr Powell," Kate says, and you smile at him. You and Kate turn to leave, but you stop and run back and around the counter, throwing yourself onto Mr Powell and hugging him tightly. A look of shock is present on his face before it melts and he hugs back.
"I'll miss you." You mumble into his shoulder.
"I'll miss you too, kid." He says. The two of you pull away and smile at each other before he nods, motioning for you to get going. You chuckle and walk back to Kate before leaving the shop. Mr Powell leans on the checkout counter when his hand lands on something. He lifts his hand from the conveyor belt, and under it is a ten-dollar bill. He lets out a sigh in disbelief before smiling as your car pulls out of the parking lot and drives away.

You soon pull up to Rose's place. As Kate parks on the side of the road, you can already see Rose waiting outside her apartment building.
Kate gets out of the car, and you follow. Kate rushes up to Rose and hugs her while you stand behind her. As they pull away, Rose looks at you and tilts her head before opening her arms. You roll your eyes playfully before walking up to her and embracing her. Rose had basically raised you alongside Kate, so you two were just as close.
Kate and Rose chat for a while, but you remain silent, only speaking when addressed. Soon, you all hug once more before heading off. The last person you have to visit is Kate's mother.
When you get to the psychiatric hospital, Kate parks the car before pausing. She looks over at you and sighs.
"If you want, you can wait in the car. I won't be too long," Kate says.
You give her a tight lip smile before nodding. Kate gets out and shuts the door. You watch as she rushes up to the building and enters, wanting to get out of the cold.
The car is silent. For once this morning, you get to experience peace. You grab your Walkman and place them over your ears. Pressing the play button with a click, Fade Into You by MazzyStar begins to play. You sink into the car chair and let the music enthral you.
Before you know it, Kate comes back, and she doesn't look too happy. The car ride has no talking, but you were both okay with that.
You continue to listen to the rest of the cassette tape as the car ride goes on. You soon open up your candy, eating it as you look out of the window.
You didn't know how long the trip would be, but you let sleep consume you.
