The dining table was set with a rustic charm, adorned with a colorful tablecloth and an array of dishes. The savory aroma of spaghetti and garlic bread wafted through the air, making everyone's stomach rumble in anticipation.
"Dinner is served!" Nathaniel announced with a flourish as he placed the steaming pot of spaghetti in the center of the table.
"Finally! I'm starving!" Lydia exclaimed, grabbing a serving spoon.
As everyone took their seats, Jace and Vivienne ended up side by side, their chairs pushed close together. Vivienne glanced at the colorful spread and grinned. "I think we just hit the jackpot. This looks amazing!"
"Right? I'm going to eat my weight in garlic bread," Jace replied, helping himself to a hefty portion of spaghetti. "Watch out, everyone."
"Careful! If you eat too much, you won't fit in your bed tonight," Lydia teased, rolling her eyes.
"Please, that's not possible," Jace said, waving his fork. "I could eat this every day and still fit in my bed!"
Cassandra laughed, serving salad onto her plate. "Well, let's see if you can still fit after seconds, Mr. Bellington."
As they dug in, the table buzzed with chatter. Serena, barely able to contain her excitement, piped up. "Did you guys see that tree outside? It's like a giant fairy tale tree!"
"Yeah, and I think I saw a squirrel that was bigger than you," Jace shot back, a smirk on his face.
"Squirrels are not bigger than me!" Serena retorted, her eyes wide. "It's probably just your imagination."
"Oh, it's definitely my imagination," Jace said dramatically, leaning closer to Vivienne. "I also imagined that you'd be on my team for board games later."
"Only if you promise not to sabotage me," Vivienne shot back, a teasing smile on her lips.
"Me? Sabotage? Never!" Jace laughed, raising his hands in mock innocence. "But I might distract you with my charm."
"Charming? That's a stretch!" Lydia interjected, stifling a laugh.
"I'll have you know that my charm is legendary," Jace insisted, puffing out his chest. "Just ask Viv."
"Legendary or legendary disaster?" Vivienne quipped, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
Evangeline watched the kids with a warm smile. "You two are a riot. If you keep this up, you might end up as the entertainment for the entire trip!"
"Bring it on! I can handle the pressure," Jace said, grinning widely.
Sebastian chimed in, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "You know, if you two are this entertaining now, I can't wait to see how you are when you're really full."
"Just you wait!" Jace said, pointing his fork at Sebastian. "You'll be begging for an encore."
As they continued to eat, the conversation flowed easily, interspersed with laughter and the clinking of silverware. Sofia leaned in close to her sister, whispering conspiratorially. "What do you think will happen next? A food fight?"
"Only if Jace throws the first piece of garlic bread," Vivienne replied, smirking at Jace.
"Oh, don't give him ideas!" Lydia warned, glancing over at Jace. "He might take that as a challenge!"
"I would never," Jace said, pretending to be serious. "I'm a gentleman at the dinner table."
"Sure you are," Lydia said, rolling her eyes again.
"Maybe a gentleman with a side of mischief," Vivienne added, stifling a laugh. "I think I like that combination."
"I'll take it! I'm basically a culinary superhero!" Jace proclaimed, striking a superhero pose with his fork.
"More like a culinary goofball!" Sofia shouted, causing everyone to erupt in laughter once more.
As dinner continued, Nathaniel cleared his throat. "Alright, everyone. We need to decide who's responsible for cleaning up after this feast."
"Not it!" Jace and Lydia said in unison, quickly looking away.
"Nice try!" Evangeline laughed. "You can't just opt out because you're sitting next to each other!"
"Next time, we should set a rotating schedule," Sebastian suggested, trying to keep a straight face. "We wouldn't want to ruin the mood of our culinary superheroes."
"Fine, but if Jace and Vivienne are on kitchen duty, I'm bringing earplugs," Lydia joked, and the table erupted in laughter again.
After a hearty meal filled with playful banter, the kids leaned back in their chairs, looking pleasantly stuffed.
"I can't move," Jace groaned, dramatically placing a hand on his stomach. "I think I've reached my limit."
Vivienne turned to him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You know what that means, right? Time for a post-dinner dance-off!"
"Oh no," Nathaniel said, feigning horror. "Not a dance-off!"
"Bring it on! I'll show you my legendary moves!" Jace declared, standing up as if preparing for battle.
"Legendary is definitely the word we'd use," Lydia snickered.
As laughter filled the cabin, the kids began to clear their plates, the energy shifting toward the next round of fun. This was just the beginning of a night filled with exploration and joy, laughter echoing through the walls of their home away from home.
