The S.S. Horizon loomed around them, a shadow of its former self. The once-mighty cargo ship creaked under the weight of the storm, the salty air thick with the smell of wet metal and fear. Gabe and Mia stepped cautiously, their eyes darting around as they searched for signs of life.
"Do you think anyone's still here?" Mia asked, her voice barely above a whisper, drowned out by the wind.
Gabe shrugged, his heart pounding. "They must be—there was a distress signal." He glanced back at Daisy, who was sniffing the ground, her instincts sharp. "Stay close, girl."
As they made their way deeper into the ship, they passed scattered crates, some of them tipped over, contents spilling out like forgotten treasures. The sound of rushing water grew louder, mingling with the howl of the wind. Gabe led the way toward the source, hoping to find the crew before it was too late.
They climbed a narrow staircase that creaked ominously beneath their weight. Each step sent a shiver of anxiety up Gabe's spine. Just as they reached the upper deck, they heard a faint shout.
"Help! We're trapped down here!"
"Did you hear that?" Mia exclaimed, her eyes wide with determination.
"Yes!" Gabe replied, adrenaline surging through him. "That way!" He pointed toward a hatch at the far end of the deck.
They hurried toward the sound, Daisy at their heels, her tail wagging but her posture tense. Gabe reached the hatch first, glancing back at Mia. "On three," he said, nodding. "One, two, three!"
With a grunt, they heaved the hatch open. It swung wide, revealing a dimly lit passageway below. The noise of rushing water grew louder, and Gabe's stomach twisted at the thought of what they might find.
"Hello?" Gabe called into the darkness. "Is anyone down there?"
"We're down here!" a voice echoed back, laced with panic. "Please, we need help!"
Gabe glanced at Mia, who nodded, her resolve firm. "Let's go!"
They climbed down the narrow ladder, the rungs slick with water. As they descended, the light from the hatch flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls. Gabe could feel the dampness in the air, the ship's interior echoing with the sounds of the storm above.
When they reached the bottom, the scene before them was chaotic. Water gushed in through a breach in the hull, pooling around the feet of two crew members who were desperately trying to stem the tide with makeshift barriers made of crates and tarp.
"Over here!" one of the crew members shouted, their eyes wide with relief. "We thought we were the only ones left!"
Gabe stepped forward, the urgency of the situation driving him. "What happened? How can we help?"
"The hull was breached during the storm!" the other crew member shouted, frantically trying to keep water at bay. "We need to seal it before it takes on more water. We've got a pump, but it's broken!"
Mia looked at Gabe, her expression serious. "We can fix it. Right, Gabe?"
"Right!" he said, feeling a surge of confidence. "Where's the pump?"
"Down the corridor, through the mess hall," one of the crew members replied, pointing. "But it's flooded. You'll need to be quick!"
"Let's go!" Gabe urged, turning to Mia. "We can do this!"
They dashed through the mess hall, Daisy trotting beside them. The room was nearly submerged, water swirling around their ankles. Gabe's heart raced as he scanned the area for the pump.
"There!" Mia pointed, spotting a bulky object partially submerged near the galley.
Gabe rushed toward it, pulling off his jacket as he stepped into the icy water. He reached the pump, its gears coated in grime. "It looks like we can fix it if we can get it out of here!"
Mia knelt beside him, her hands working quickly. "Help me pull!"
Together, they heaved the pump free from the water, their muscles straining. Just as they got it out, a loud crash echoed from above, and the ship shuddered violently.
"Gabe!" Mia shouted, panic in her voice. "We need to hurry!"
"I know!" he replied, focusing on the pump. "Let's see if we can get it working."
As they inspected the pump, Daisy sniffed around, her instincts sharp. Suddenly, she barked, her attention drawn to a pile of debris nearby.
"Daisy, what is it?" Gabe called, looking over.
The dog pawed at the wreckage, revealing a tangle of ropes and tools. "Look, Mia!" Gabe exclaimed, spotting a wrench that might just fit.
"Perfect!" Mia said, grabbing it. "Let's fix this!"
They worked in tandem, Gabe holding the pump steady while Mia tightened screws and adjusted valves. The sounds of rushing water filled their ears, but their focus narrowed.
After a few tense moments, they stepped back, panting. "Okay, let's see if it works," Gabe said, taking a deep breath.
Mia flipped the switch. The pump sputtered for a moment, then roared to life, the sound echoing triumphantly in the flooded room. Water began to drain away, the pressure easing slightly.
"YES!" Gabe shouted, pumping his fist in the air.
"Now we just need to keep it running while we seal the breach!" Mia said, her eyes sparkling with determination.
With a renewed sense of purpose, they sprinted back toward the crew members, who were still battling the rising water. "We've got the pump working!" Gabe called out. "Now we need to seal the breach!"
"Great!" one of the crew members replied, relief washing over their face. "We've got some wood and nails. Can you help us?"
Gabe and Mia nodded, adrenaline coursing through their veins. With Daisy at their side, they sprang into action, working together with the crew to gather materials, secure the breach, and keep the water at bay.
As the storm raged outside, the once-distant sound of hope grew louder. Gabe felt a thrill of camaraderie and courage; they were in this together. The S.S. Horizon may have been battered, but with their combined efforts, it would not be lost. Gabe was surprised he was damned. He thought he'd only seen this in history books. He learned it was a Venice class bulk carrier which vanished in 1967.
