it was a terrible day

*The school day starts on Tuesday, and the alarm rings at 7:00.*I yawned and got up. The sun was just rising outside my window, filling my room with light as I began another ordinary day. I heard a voice behind my closed door—it was my mom:

"Gin, breakfast is ready! Come and eat, or you'll be late for school. Hurry up a bit!"

"Okay, Mom, I'm coming. I just need to wash my face and hands first."

"Alright, but hurry, Gin; it's already 7:15."After washing my face and hands, I headed to breakfast and sat at the table. By the time I finished eating, it was already 7:40, so I quickly got dressed in my school uniform and left. As usual, I saw my classmate Rino.

"Hey, what's up, Rino?"

"Hey, Gin, my friend! I'm so happy today; something amazing happened last night. I'll tell you after school at the park—it's a bit of a long story."

"Hey, Rino, now I'm really curious! Why did you have to mention it now? Ugh, now I have to wait till after school," I said.

We continued walking toward school, with Rino holding a booklet. It was probably because exams were close—just a week away. Before we knew it, we were already in class. Four lessons passed, and it was almost lunchtime. I was walking in the hallway because Rino had his nose buried in his book. Then, I noticed a classroom and saw Reiko inside; she must be in class 2-E. I was just about to walk over to her when I saw a boy with her, and they seemed really close. So, I decided not to go and headed back to my classroom instead, though thoughts kept swirling in my mind.

Who was that boy? What kind of connection did they have? How close were they?Just before I entered my classroom, I accidentally bumped into a girl. She was really sweet-looking.Gin: "I'm so sorry; I was lost in thought. That was my fault."Girl: "N-no, it's fine. It's pretty normal for people to be distracted these days, especially with exams coming up."

She looked at me for a moment, then lowered her head and hurried away. I wondered if she was waiting for me to say something, or if I had been rude somehow. Lost in thought, I entered the classroom just as the bell rang. I went to my seat, and the teacher came in right after, beginning the lesson. After a while, the bell rang for a long recess. Everyone left, except me, a girl from our class, and Rino. Rino and the girl were studying at different desks, while I stared out the open window, reflecting on everything that had happened. Then I heard a voice behind me. I turned to see the girl going over to Rino and tapping him on the shoulder. Rino looked at her, surprised.

Girl: "U-um, would you like to study together?"

Rino: "Y-yeah, o-of course. Sit next to me."

Girl: "Thank you. Let's start studying!"

Rino: "O-okay, let's."

The girl sat beside Rino. I was witnessing a romantic moment with my best friend, who usually couldn't talk to girls easily. I quietly watched them as their faces turned red. It was obvious they had feelings for each other.Seeing them like that made me think that maybe if I had told Reiko how I felt back in elementary school, we could have been like that too.A tear slipped from my eye. I didn't know why it came. I'd never felt this way before. I got up and went to wash my face. After washing up, I was heading back to my classroom when I passed Reiko's class again. Our eyes met for a moment, and I remembered what that girl had done with

Rino.

Maybe if I did the same, I could take the first step. So I decided to grab my book and go to Reiko. But as I entered her classroom, I saw that boy sitting next to her, studying, and they were laughing together. They looked so happy, so I ran away.Back in my class, I saw that Rino and the girl were still studying together. They looked so happy. For the first time, I felt a painful, heavy feeling in my heart. I put my head down on the desk and

cried; tears streamed down my face as I felt terrible.

After a long time, it was finally time to leave school. I walked home, weighed down by these painful feelings, and saw Reiko with that boy again as they walked toward their houses. I immediately ran home, locked myself in my room, buried my face in my pillow, and cried. These

thoughts and emotions were eating away at me, and I felt utterly miserable.

Three hours later, my mom knocked on my door, saying:"Gin, hey Gin, are you asleep? Are you still awake, honey? Say something."I wiped my tears and wanted to answer, but something held me back. I continued crying, and my mom assumed I had fallen asleep and walked away. Half an hour later, my phone started ringing. When I looked, I saw it was Rino calling. Then I remembered the topic we'd talked about

this morning. I picked up the phone.

Rino: "H-hey, man. I'm sorry I couldn't keep our plan. Remember we were going to meet up after school? I had something really important come up, and now I'm with someone else. I'm sorry I broke my promise, but we can hang out another time, okay?"

Gin: "I-it's okay, man. Really, d-don't worry about it. I'm fine."

Rino: "I'm really sorry, Gin, but I'll make it up to you on Saturday. How about we go to a café? Are

you free?"

At that moment, I remembered my promise to Reiko—I was going to show her around on Saturday. So, I suggested Sunday to Rino instead, and we hung up. I fell asleep, still feeling those

awful emotions gnawing at me inside.
