Motivation is difficult these days. Some people struggle to stay motivated to write because they have a lot going on or, like me, they have ADHD, and sitting down to write and staying focused is as difficult as taking a really important exam.
But it's not impossible. Here are some tips to stay motivated.
1: Set clear goals
Some people work better if they have a time management goal. Having that "I have to get it done at this date, at this time" mindset works better than you'd think. Break your writing into manageable milestones. Focus on completing one chapter, or one section at a time.
2: Create A Routine
Create a writing schedule, and stick to it. Even if its "Sit down at this place for this time and write" it works, it's perfect. Consistency helps build momentum.
3: A buddy Pal
Share your chosen goals with someone, a friend or family member, who can check in on your progress. Consider joining a writing group, or creating your own. Having someone breathe down your neck chanting "Have you written 500 words today" helps a lot better than you'd think.
(This is totally not based on personal experience, also I am terrified of my older sister)
4: Visualize Sucess
Every time you sit down, take a moment to close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine yourself farther down the road, imagine being a successful author, the fans, the readers. Imagine the success you are working for. Be it fame, money or just because you like it. Just imagine it. It's very good motivation.
5: Discipline
Treat writing like a job, like a normal standard 9-5 (Writing is a job but still) Show up even when you don't feel like it, stay focused, work on your goals and so on. Imagine you have a boss standing behind you making sure you are working. (Hey! You better be working or you're fired!)
6: Limit Distractions
Create a place where you can sit down and concentrate fully on your writing. Too many things at home distracting you? Go to a coffee shop for a few hours. Kids won't leave you alone? Put them up for adoption-- I mean give them something to distract them even if it's for five or ten minutes. Husband can't find his keys just sell him-I mean....just hope he's at work? Wife won't stop complaining? Duck tape her mou-I mean tell her softly that you are working and just to give you ten minutes then focus on her.
7: Reward yourself!
Set up some sort of system of rewards for hitting certain milestones to enforce positive progress. Such as "If I write 1000 words today, I'll eat a cupcake" if you don't reach that milestone then you don't get your cupcake (I don't make the rules, focus on writing!)
8: Reflect on your why
Remind yourself why you started this project. Why did you create this book? What was your end goal? Keep asking yourself what the reason is behind why you started writing. Sometimes reminding yourself gives you a boost.
9: Stay flexible
If you hit a block (writer's block) allow yourself to pivot (PIVOT!) or explore different aspects of your story to help boost your passion. Sometimes if you focus on one project too long you burn out, so to prevent that go and work on a different project or write that chapter you are excited to write.
10: Keep a writing journal
Document your thoughts and frustrations. It can help you progress challenges and maintain clarity. (Turn back to number 9 about staying flexible when you hit a writer's block)
Staying focused and motivated can be hard, but it's not impossible.
