In the wonderful world of writing, there are different types of writers. Before you start writing, it's best you understand the different types of writers that exist. That way you can identify where you fit in best. In this chapter, we'll discuss the common categories of writers, each with their approaches and purposes.
1: The Storyteller
At the heart of fiction lies us (possibly if you are on wattpad) the storytellers. These writers create narratives that transport readers to different worlds, whether through novels, short stories or screenplays. They thrive on imagination and creativity. Creating strong plots, and creating amazing (And maybe not so amazing) characters.
If you enjoy telling tales and creating worlds you might just be a storyteller at heart.
2: The Informer
These kinds of writers focus mainly on delivering knowledge. This category includes journalists, bloggers and non-fiction authors who aim to educate or inform their audience. Their writing is often straightforward, prioritizing clairt and accuracy.
If you enjoy researching and sharing facts then you are an informer.
3: The Poet
Poems have existed for as long as humans have lived (I find old English to be poetic because have you read Shakespeare?) Poets express emotions and ideas through the careful arrangement of words, often focusing on rhythm and imagery. Their work can range from structured words like sonnets to free verse.
If you find beauty in brevity and enjoy playing with language, you might be into the poet's craft.
4: The Persuader
Persuasive writers aim to influence opinions or actions. This includes copywriters, advertisers, and opinion columnists. Their writing is often compelling and strategic, designed to evoke emotions or provoke thought.
If you have a knack for convincing others, you may lean towards this style.
5: The Content Creator
In today's world, with easy access to the internet at any point of any day, these are the rising writers of today's society. Content creators produce engaging material for various platforms, including social media, blogs and videos. They blend storytelling with information, often focusing on audience interaction and engagement.
if you thrive in dynamic environments and enjoy connecting with readers, this could be your calling.
6: The Academic
Academic writers are just that, academic. Focusing their writing around scholarly, articles, research papers and so on. Their work is often analytical and structured, requiring a deep understanding of their subject matter.
If you enjoy diving into research and contributing to your field (or you are just a school geek hehe) then this type of writing may suit you best.
7: The Memoirist
Memoirists write about their own lives, reflecting on personal experiences and insights. Their work often blends storytelling with introspection, allowing readers to connect with their journey. These are the most common types of books/writers you might stumble upon.
if you have stories to share and lessons learned you may find this type of writing to be more you.
Now, while these categories can help you understand your strengths and preferences, many writers blend elements from each type together. You might be a storyteller who also enjoys informative writing or a poet with a flair for persuasion. Blending and mixing is okay. The key is to explore and experiment with different styles until you discover what fits you best.
As you continue to write, remember that there is no right or wrong way/type of writing. Each category brings its value and perspective to the world of writing. Open your mind and allow it to guide you through your writing path.
In the chapter to come, we'll delve deeper into developing your skills and finding your style regardless of where you begin.
