Mer INAPPROPRIATE TIMING

She had given him her breeder blessing. Mer went through the motions of getting the fix-all, preparing it with new vigor.

Shit. Fuck. His dick had turned to stone—inappropriate timing, but an absolutely understandable reaction. Her fucking blessing.

She was purring for Gem. Had been purring. So had he. But it all sat differently now with her blessing. It changed everything. Zinn glowed gold and copper to him—the mess of her hair, the exhausted circles under her eyes, all smoothed out—as if he could see past the cloak of her outer person and directly into her heart. Was that the way she saw in him? Did she see him so clearly, and accept everything anyway?

He felt powerful, as if together they could do anything. Fight off a hundred ferals, even.

He fixed the broth for her. Settled the cup and spoon within reach before he got to his knees, tunneled his fingers through the snarls of hair at the back of her head, and pulled her up for a rough, wet kiss. He licked the seam of her lips, outside, inside, devouring her until she was breathless.

"You need to eat, too. Now. No arguments. I'll sit next to Gem for a minute. You need food," Mer said, looking into her eyes after the kiss.

She opened her mouth to say she wasn't hungry. Mer knew it was the truth, but he didn't care.

"You will eat, woman." It wasn't a command, but the tone was harsh, the one he used when he didn't want to argue about anything, especially when it came to taking care of his mate and the little tiny seed of a baby growing inside of her.

The newly strengthened connection told him everything. Everything. A flood of knowledge and understanding that had been a cloudy mystery before, opened up, exposed to sunshine. He'd thought he knew her, after the exchange of claiming bites—could read her mind, knew when she was lusting after his worthless ass. That had been paltry compared to this new, precious thread stringing them together. This woman. This amazing woman.
