"You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you" gets played from downstairs, hearing it faint all the way upstairs.
The smell of toasted butter and burned bacon makes me eager to get out of bed. I bolt downstairs, to find my two sisters singing, dancing around in the kitchen. I take in the view in front of me and catch myself smiling, now getting a glimpse of the stuff laying on the counter. It looks like some type of pancake mix, that's explains the smell, and decide to let my presence know.
"You're so Vain by Carly simon, good choice" I applaud which makes Brynn laugh and raise her wooden spoon in the air as a mockery victory, trailing it like a microphone. "Thank you, thank you very much" she sings, doing a little spin as she mixes the batter. My other sister, Hazel, grins and nudges Brynn, mumbling the words along to the chorus, both of them completely in their element.
"Hey sleeping beauty," Hazel teases, eyeing my bed hair and striped pajamas. "Finally decided to grace us with your presence?".
This makes me chuckle "Couldn't resist when I heard my favorite Cary Simon song and smelled something burning," I tease back, now walking around the counter to the stove to see what they're making. There's a half burned piece of bacon put on the side next to it, a pancake looking ready to be flipped. Surprisingly there's a decent amount of pancakes stacked on the plate on the counter.
Brynn scrunches her nose at me.
"It was my first batch! Those always don't turn out good,". Hazel now chimes in "Right, and then the second batch" She laughs as she flipped the perfectly golden brown pancake on the other side. "They say the third time the charm for a reason" Brynn scolds back at her. I grab a piece of bacon from the pile that survived and pop it in my mouth. "This actually tastes edible, I'm impressed". Brynn sticks her tongue out to me and Hazel hands me another spatula.
"Instead of mocking your sister, Get your butt over here, and help me with these pancakes,". I now turn my attention to her "Since, when do you trust me in the kitchen?".
"Since, I have to hop onto a phone call" she says with a smirk as she waddles away onto the stairs. Brynn turns the music up a little louder, just as Hazel disappears upstairs. The two of us singing at the top of our lungs, moving around the kitchen, Putting on a show for each other. Putting on a show for each other.
"I'm so vain, I probably think this song is about me" I belted, the sound echoing off the walls, and making Brynn smile . She knows how much I loved to sing. "Show off," Brynn teases, hearing the smile in her tone. I grin back at her, feeling a rush of joy, the happiness of singing for fun again.
As the song ends, Hazel is done with her phone call, returning to the kitchen. "I could hear your guys screaming all the way upstairs" she half-shouts which makes Brynn almost spill the batter. Hazel leans against the counter "Nothing like some Carly Simon to start the day, huh?" As the intro of the new tune softly builds up, I feel a warmth looking at my sisters. It feels like the kind of scene straight out of "How to lose a guy in 10 days"---messy, chaotic but in the most perfect way. "Nothing like it," I say walking towards the cupboard getting plates for us. Just like that our breakfast turned into a little concert, our own recreation of a morning in a romcom.
"If only I had someone like Ben in my life" Brynn confesses, a frown upon her face. No clue where this is suddenly coming from, Likely because of all the romance books she's been reading. "You're lucky you don't, men aren't like that in real life, sweet pea " I haven't heard that nickname in a long time, our mom always called her that for being too kind for her own good. "You don't know that, you just haven't met them yet". "Oh yes, and I'm happy I haven't, now scoot, the bacon is burning, " pushing Brynn to the side to get to the burning bacon.
