If summer vacation was supposed to have any meaning, this year it wouldn't. No, at fifteen, Sasha was stuck in this small town instead of relaxing on some southern beach, his father preferred to stay here because he had found love with a lovely middle school teacher who had a son Sasha's age, and tonight, they would be having dinner at their place.

"Son, hurry up, or we'll be late for dinner!" his father called from downstairs.

Sasha rolled his eyes, finding it ridiculous that his father was rushing him when they had spent the entire summer having dinner at each other's houses.

"I'm coming!" he replied, coming down the stairs nonchalantly.

His father was waiting with an impatient smile on his face. "What's wrong? Don't you want to come eat Adriana's lasagna?"

"Oh yes, believe me, it's the only cool thing about this summer—getting to eat with the Rodriguezes'."

"I take that personally, kid," his father said, feigning disappointment.

Sasha sighed and added, "I mean, I haven't done anything during the holidays except play video games with Alex and watch The Walking Dead and The Lord of the Rings but besides that I haven't done much. »

"You forgot to get ahead on your classes for the coming year," his father replied, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah, of course, I really worked hard, Dad," Sasha replied with a hint of sarcasm.

They left the house and got into his father's old car, a Sedan that had seen better days. The drive to the Rodriguez house was relatively silent, only interrupted by the music on the radio and a few comments from his father about the traffic or the weather.

Upon arriving at the Rodriguezes', Sasha caught a delicious whiff of lasagna that warmed his heart a little. Adriana greeted them with her usual warm smile, while Alex and his mother finished setting the table.

"Hey Sasha! Ready for another movie marathon after dinner?" Alex exclaimed excitedly.

Sasha shrugged, a smirk on his face as he glanced at his father. "Why not? It'll make the evening more interesting."

Adriana truly had a talent for cooking, and the lasagna was simply delicious. He and his father had gotten into the habit of eating ready-made meals or fast food. Although Sasha was quite good at baking, he wasn't the type to cook, while his father, Arthur Nolan, was far too busy to even catch a breath, being the fire chief of the town.

After the meal, as planned, Sasha and Alex retreated to Alex's room to continue their movie marathon, as they settled in comfortably.

"So, are you ready to head back to your prestigious boarding school?" Sasha asked Alex.

The boy with black hair rushed to his suitcase and slammed it shut as if a bomb were hidden inside. "Yeah, it's pretty boring. We have two nights left before we leave. We should think about anything but school."

Sasha raised his eyebrows at his friend's strange behavior, finding it more interesting than any movie. Sure, the young man loved films and video games; in fact, he was the one who had introduced Alex to that world. But after spending the whole summer doing just that, this reaction was intriguing.

"Is everything okay, Alex?" he asked, trying to make sense of his friend's odd behavior.

Alex blushed slightly and shrugged. "Yeah, everything's fine. Just... stressed about going back to school, you know?"
