John B was sat in the hospital armchair in their room, the husky breathing of their newborn daughter sounding softly as she lay asleep on his bare chest. Sarah had always talked about how important skin to skin was after the baby was born, it was something she really advocated for - knowing it was important for bonding. He adjusted the blanket that lay atop of her tiny body for extra warmth and took in the pure sight in front of him. Every inch of her was perfect, she was the image of her mother. From her eyes, her ski sloped nose and her preciously plump lips. He stroked her head lightly with his finger, causing her to whimper. "Shhh, daddy's got you." He whispered, planting a kiss atop her head. Taking in every second he had with his daughter in her first few hours of life, he couldn't believe that this was real.
The door to their room opened and the nurses wheeled through Sarah's bed, she was all propped up and looking extremely tired. Due to some complications with her previous gunshot wound, they had to perform a c-section. Catching a glimpse of her husband with their daughter, her face brightened a little. "Hi." She croaked out. "Hey Sarah, how're you feeling?" John B asked softly, slowly standing up with the delicate newborn in his hold. The nurses reconnected up Sarah's bed, and made sure all of her vitals were good before leaving. "I feel.. okay." She replied, breathing deeply as she tried to readjust herself. She was still a little numb from the epidural, her legs felt tingly like they weren't attached to her body.
"How is she?" Sarah asked, peering up to look at the little angel in her husband's arms. John B looked up from gazing at their daughter to look into his wife's chestnut eyes. "She's perfect..." He whispered, "Just like her mommy." He said, smiling at her. Sarah's eyes began to well up, "Can I? Can I hold her?" She asked softly. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that she didn't get to hold her baby the minute she arrived. John B nodded, and carefully handed their daughter over into Sarah's arms. He immediately adjusted the pillows around her to ensure she was stable enough to hold the small child. Sarah had been on a lot of medications and was still a little unsteady.
Taking her first proper glance at her daughter in her arms, a teardrop travelled down Sarah's face. "Hi beautiful." She whispered, cooing at her as she lay sound asleep in her mom's embrace. John B watched the two of them intently, reaching across he wiped her tear away with his thumb, he couldn't believe his eyes. His two most perfect girls were right there in front of him. He perched on the edge of the bed as he watched his wife take in every detail of her. Sarah stroked her finger across her fuzzy cheek. "You're so perfect." She said softly, as she began to count all ten fingers and all ten toes. John B chuckling a little at how sweet this moment was, he could feel his eyes filling with tears at the sight. Sarah readjusted the tiny baby, opening her hospital gown a little and laying her on her chest. Feeling the closeness of her daughter again was something she will never forget. She felt immediate relief, she felt safe. She felt complete. The little noises that she dreamt about, sounding through the room. John B took a hold of Sarah's free hand, stroking the back of it with her thumb being careful as to not nudge her IV. "I'm so proud of you Sarah." He told her sincerely, trying not to let tears escape him.
Tearing her glance away from their daughter, she looked over at her husband. Immediately melting at his soft eyes. "It wasn't the way I wanted..." She began, a sad tone to her voice. "But that doesn't matter now, she's here and she's safe." She looked back at the precious baby on her chest. "She's perfect. You're perfect." John B told her, smiling at them both. Despite the amount of pain that pounded through her body right now, in that moment Sarah had never felt better.
"I think..." Sarah started, "I think I'm set on her name." She told him. They had been discussing their daughter's name for months and although they were set on it, Sarah had wanted to see her before confirming. "You are?" John B beamed, smiling at them both. "Mhm." She hummed, "Valerie Elizabeth Routledge." She confirmed, her voice soft. "Valerie Elizabeth Routledge." John B repeated back, almost a whisper. "Welcome to the world baby girl." He continued as he leaned over and planted a kiss on the tiny baby. Sarah turned to look at her husband, John B looked at his wife. She was so beautiful, with their daughter laying on her chest, he couldn't help but think about how she was meant to be a mother. "I love you Sarah." John B told her with confidence. Sarah smiled shyly, a strand of her tangled hair falling in front of her face. John B reached over and tucked it behind her ear. "I love you." Sarah replied, a sleepy smile across her face.
Leaning in, he planted a soft kiss on her plump lips. Valerie whimpered as she wriggled a little on her mom's chest. "Sounds like somebody's already a little jealous!" Sarah joked, letting out a small laugh before wincing in pain. "Sarah, baby. Let me take her, you need some rest." John B told her, sounding concerned. Sarah looked longingly at her daughter, she really was exhausted. "She'll be here right when you wake up." John B reassured her, as Sarah nodded, admitting defeat and handed the small girl over to her father. "Sh, sh, shhh." John B hushed, trying to soothe the infant in his arms. Sarah watched the two of them sleepily as she began to fall into a daze. Seeing John B take so naturally to bring a father is all she could have dreamed of. This life is all she could have dreamed of, and it was coming true right before her eyes.
It had always been Sarah and John B against the world, but now they had their little Valerie.
