CHAPTER 1
"Come on Addie. I'm hungry. Can you hurry? Please? We're two blocks from home! I'm starving and you can read later." Kaia complained. Addison smiled as she felt Kaia's impatience and pent-up energy. She was probably just hangry and needed to let off some steam.
"Well if we're two blocks from home then why don't you go on ahead?" Addison calmly replied without looking up from her book. "That way you can have a snack ready for me too." This time Addison glanced up and gave Kaia a cheeky grin.
"See you! But hurry up or Brandon and Gilbert might not leave you any popcorn!"
"Thanks, I'll be there soon. Love you, Kaia!"
"à bientôt (Translation: see you later.) Addie!" Kaia shouted, her footsteps already pounding on the sidewalk as she raced home.
Addison returned to her book as Kaia rounded the corner and disappeared. Addison took the opportunity to slow her pace to a casual stroll. After all, in a small town like Lakewood, Wisconsin there wasn't much need to hurry. Other than the fact that her brothers might eat all the popcorn. As she turned the corner she tripped and stumbled on a large crack in the sidewalk. Ugg, I forgot about this part of the sidewalk.
"You might find that it's easier to walk if you can see where you're going." Said a boy with a crisp British accent. Addison looked up sharply to see two unfamiliar people. There was a tall brown-haired boy with admittedly stunning teal eyes, and a shorter blond-haired girl standing about six feet away. "uh, hi." said Addison unsure of how to reply. "You guys aren't from around here are you?"
The boy grinned charmingly, "What gave it away?" He said in his British accent.
"Hi, I'm Sophie," said the Girl, with a decidedly American accent. "and this is Fitz" she gestured to the boy giving him a pointed look. Addison glanced between the two. She could definitely sense some tension and nervousness. And in Addison's limited experience, that combination never tended to end well.
"uh, I'm-"
"You're Addison Nash right?" Fitz questioned.
Okay, how do they know my name? "Yeah, that's right. Where did you say you guys were from again?" Addison asked, deciding to try to play it cool and see where this extremely unusual conversation was going.
"It's really nice to meet you, Addison! And to answer your question, I'm from San Diego." Sophie declared enthusiastically. "May I ask what book you are reading?"
San Diego? That's a long way away. Addison glanced down at the book cover, noting that it was quite obvious what book she was reading. "Oh, I'm reading 'The Lord of the Rings'. And if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing all the way up here?"
"It's funny how the author describes Elves in that book." Stated Fitz, clearly not answering her question. "It's not how they are in real life at all."
Addison stared blankly at the boy. What on earth was he talking about? Was he mad? "Uh, okay. Good to know." Addison decided Kaia was right, she could read later. "If you'll excuse me, I need to be headed home," she said, deciding to take the long way home past the post office. As Addison turned to cross the street, the girl jumped forward "We're here for you," she said and grabbed her arm to stop her. As she did so, Addison felt a wave of blinding emotions crash over her. Uncertainty, nervousness, worry, confusion, determination, and surprisingly, joy flooded Addison's brain, making it hard to focus on anything else. She stumbled backward, gasping for breath. And then suddenly the suffocating wave of emotions stopped, leaving her dazed and confused. Addison had just enough sense to notice that Sophie's hand was no longer gripping her arm. What on earth had just happened? Why were they here for her? If Addison hadn't been so out of breath she would have made a run for it. So instead, to buy herself some time she gasped out "What did you do?!"
"Nothing!" Sophie exclaimed, "I don't know what happened!"
"I've never felt anything that strong before," Addison muttered to herself. Her breath was slowly returning to her, however, her thoughts were still spinning in a million different directions making it hard to focus. Addison just barely caught the look the two sent each other before Fitz stated "You must be an Empath."
"A what?" Addison fought to bring her brain back into focus. What was an empath? She knew she was pretty empathetic. Did that connect somehow? Yet at the same time, she had never felt close to anything like that before.
"You see, where we come from everybody has a different ability," He stated as if it was the most normal thing ever.
"San Diego?"
"No, we come from the Lost Cities." Corrected Fitz, "Well, Sophie technically grew up in San Diego."
Sophie stepped forward, glaring at Fitz, "You're not helping." She turned and looked sympathetically at Addison. "Look Addison," Sophie interjected, "there's no easy way to explain this. Fitz and I are Elves. And so are you."
