Ray hadn't been able to stop thinking about Adrian since that night in the café. She didn't know what it was about him—the intensity in his eyes, the calm yet guarded way he spoke, or the way he seemed to carry a lifetime of secrets behind his quiet words. Whatever it was, it lingered, like a spark that wouldn't go out no matter how hard she tried to ignore it.

But Ray was no stranger to curiosity. She had a habit of asking questions, of searching for answers even when she knew she shouldn't. And with Adrian, her curiosity had turned into something she didn't quite understand—something that felt like the start of a dangerous obsession.

A week passed with no word from him. No unexpected texts or calls, no chance encounters in the places she frequented. The silence was maddening, but she told herself that it was for the best. Adrian had warned her, James had warned her, and her own instincts had hinted that whatever he was involved in was better left untouched.

Still, late at night, her mind wandered, replaying their conversation, dissecting every word he'd said, every glance he'd given her. She told herself it was ridiculous, that she was only feeling this way because he'd saved her from the routine and given her a glimpse of a life beyond the ordinary. But deep down, she knew it was more than that.

Then, one evening, as she was closing the bookstore, her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, her heart racing as she saw an unknown number.

*Stay inside tonight. Lock the doors.*

She froze, her eyes locked on the message. There was no name, but somehow, she knew it was from him. Her fingers trembled as she typed a response.

*Adrian? What's going on?*

Three dots appeared on the screen as he typed back, then disappeared, only to reappear again. Finally, his reply came through.

*Just stay safe, Ray. Please.*

Her pulse quickened. There was no explanation, no detail about what was happening, but the urgency in his words told her that something was wrong. She didn't want to be the naïve girl who ignored a warning, but she also couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that something serious was happening.

Against her better judgment, Ray slipped her coat on and left the bookstore, her footsteps echoing in the empty street. She told herself she was just going home, that she'd lock her doors and do as Adrian had asked. But she hadn't gone more than a few blocks when she noticed a car, its headlights off, creeping along the curb behind her.

Her heart pounded, her instincts telling her to keep walking, but a sense of dread settled over her. She quickened her pace, glancing over her shoulder to see if the car was still following her. It was.

Ray's mind raced. Should she call Adrian? Or maybe the police? But if this had anything to do with Adrian's world, then maybe he'd be her safest option.

Just as she reached for her phone, the car sped up, pulling to a sudden stop beside her. A man in a dark coat stepped out, his eyes scanning her coldly.

"Ray, right?" he asked, his voice smooth but empty, like he was reciting lines he'd rehearsed.

Ray took a step back, clutching her phone in her hand. "Who are you?"

"Let's not make this difficult." His tone was calm, almost too calm, as though he were talking to someone he had no plans of letting go. "Just come with us. No one has to get hurt."

Ray's mind reeled. She didn't know what he wanted, but everything about him screamed danger. She glanced around, desperate for a way out, but the street was empty, the shops closed, the alleyways cloaked in darkness.

In a last act of desperation, she raised her phone and dialed the only number she knew would pick up.

"Ray?" Adrian's voice came through immediately, filled with tension.

"Adrian," she whispered, trying to keep her voice steady. "There's someone here. He... he wants me to go with him."

There was a brief pause, then Adrian's voice turned sharp. "Ray, listen to me carefully. Run. Don't stop. Don't look back. I'm on my way."

Before she could respond, the man in front of her stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he noticed her phone. "Now, now, that won't do." He reached out, grabbing her arm with an iron grip.

Ray's fight-or-flight instincts kicked in. She pulled away with all her strength, twisting out of his grip, and took off down the street. She didn't know where she was going; she only knew she needed to get away.

Behind her, she could hear the man shout, hear the echo of footsteps as he and his partner gave chase. Her heart thundered as she rounded a corner, slipping into a narrow alleyway. She pressed herself against the wall, her breath shallow, trying to keep quiet as their footsteps grew louder.

"Where is she?" she heard one of them growl.

"I don't know. She couldn't have gotten far."

Ray held her breath, willing herself to stay still. The seconds stretched out, her heart pounding as she heard them move further down the alley. She counted to ten, waiting until the sound of their footsteps faded, then slipped back out, moving as quickly and quietly as she could toward the main street.

She had barely made it a few steps when a pair of headlights rounded the corner, flooding the street with light. A familiar black car pulled up beside her, and the passenger door swung open.

"Get in!" Adrian's voice commanded.

Without thinking, Ray jumped into the car, slamming the door shut as Adrian sped off, his face tense, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.

For a moment, they drove in silence, the city lights blurring past them. Ray's heart pounded, her breath coming in short gasps as the adrenaline coursed through her veins. She could still feel the man's grip on her arm, the chill of his eyes as he'd looked at her.

Finally, Adrian spoke, his voice low and controlled. "Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, trying to steady her breathing. "No... just scared."

He glanced at her, his gaze softer than she'd ever seen it. "I told you to stay safe," he murmured, almost as if chastising himself for not protecting her sooner.

Ray met his gaze, a mixture of relief and fear in her eyes. "Adrian... who are they? And why are they after me?"

Adrian's jaw clenched, a shadow passing over his face. "They're people who would do anything to hurt me. And they thought you were my weakness."

Ray's heart twisted at his words. She didn't know what his life entailed, but she understood, in that moment, that whatever bond they shared, it had put her in danger. And yet, despite everything, she felt a fierce determination to stand by him.

"I'm sorry," Adrian murmured, his voice rougher now. "I should've kept my distance. But... it's too late for that now."

Ray reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Adrian... I don't want you to keep your distance."

He looked at her, something unreadable in his eyes. And as they drove into the night, Ray knew one thing for sure: there was no going back.
