The ride back into the city was tense. Adrian's face was set in a hard line, his mind clearly racing with the latest threat. Ray kept quiet, feeling the weight of his worry pressing down on her. As they neared the city limits, Adrian took an abrupt turn, steering them toward his estate rather than her apartment.
Ray glanced at him, confused. "Where are we going?"
He didn't take his eyes off the road. "You're staying with me for a while."
She blinked, surprised. "Adrian, I... I appreciate everything you're doing, but I don't think that's necessary. I'll be fine at my place."
He pulled the car up to his mansion, turning off the engine before meeting her gaze. "There's been a breach in security," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "This isn't up for discussion, Ray. Until I find out who's behind it, you're safer here."
Ray bit her lip, her independence warring with the fear now creeping into her chest. "But what about my life, Adrian? My job, my friends... I can't just disappear and hide away in your house."
He softened, his hand reaching out to gently take hers. "Ray, I know this is asking a lot. But this isn't like anything you've dealt with before. Whoever is targeting us isn't just going to wait around. They know about you now, and that puts you in danger."
She hesitated, glancing up at the imposing mansion, its towering stone walls and iron gates somehow making her feel trapped. But when she looked back at Adrian, she saw a plea in his eyes she hadn't expected. He wasn't just ordering her to stay—he was asking her to trust him.
"I'll keep you safe here," he continued, his voice softer. "I promise. You won't be locked up; you'll have everything you need. Just... stay close to me, Ray. Let me protect you."
Ray took a shaky breath, feeling her resistance begin to crack. It was hard to argue against the logic—and against the unspoken care in his eyes. Still, this was Adrian's world, not hers. She wasn't used to giving up control.
"Fine," she murmured, finally relenting. "But just for a little while. And I want my own space."
A flicker of relief crossed his face. "Of course. I'll make sure everything you need is set up." He paused, then added with a smirk, "Besides, I wouldn't want you stealing my bed."
She rolled her eyes, grateful for his attempt at lightening the mood, though her heart was still pounding. "Wouldn't dream of it."
They entered the house, the grand hallway stretching out before them. Despite the mansion's intimidating elegance, Ray could feel the weight of security here. She was in Adrian's world now, a place of power and shadows.
He led her to a room on the second floor, complete with a large bed, fireplace, and a wall of bookshelves filled with novels she hadn't expected to see. She gave him a questioning look.
"I thought you might like something familiar," he said, almost sheepishly. "I had my staff prepare it. Just in case."
She bit back a smile, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "You thought of everything, didn't you?"
Adrian's eyes softened. "I can't risk losing you, Ray. I meant what I said—you're under my protection."
Ray nodded, feeling a strange mixture of comfort and uncertainty. She didn't belong here, in this fortress of secrets and danger, but with Adrian, she felt... safe. It was a strange contradiction, and it made her heart race.
As he lingered in the doorway, he looked back at her, his usual mask slipping for just a moment. "I'll be just down the hall. If you need anything, or... if you don't feel safe, you come to me."
She nodded, whispering a soft "Thank you" as he stepped back and closed the door. The reality of her situation settled in—she was under his roof, under his protection, and in the heart of a world that terrified her. But as she lay down, she found herself strangely comforted by the thought of Adrian nearby, just a few steps away, standing watch over her.
It was a feeling she wasn't sure she could resist.
