The atmosphere in the mansion shifted as dusk fell, shadows creeping into every corner. Anastasia felt an oppressive weight settle over her, a sense that something was profoundly wrong. Aunt Madam Grey had welcomed them with a facade of warmth, but there was an undercurrent of tension that made her skin prickle.Jules paced the parlor, flicking through a dusty tome he'd found on a nearby shelf. "This place is full of old books," he said, his voice filled with excitement. "Maybe we can find out more about our family's magic.""Or maybe we'll just find more secrets," Anastasia replied, glancing at the grand portrait of their ancestors that hung over the fireplace, their eyes seeming to watch her with knowing gazes. The magic she had always heard about felt tangible here, but it was laced with danger.Madam Grey entered the room, her presence commanding as always. "I trust you are settling in?" she asked, her eyes narrowing as she observed them."Getting there," Anastasia replied, forcing a smile. "Jules is eager to learn more about our history.""Good," Madam Grey said, but there was a strange edge to her voice. "Knowledge is power, especially in our family. You'll need it, dear."The ominous undertone hung in the air like a storm cloud, and Anastasia felt a chill run through her. "What do you mean?"Before Madam Grey could respond, a loud crash echoed from the back of the mansion, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps. "Stay here," Madam Grey commanded, her expression shifting from calm to alarmed. She rushed toward the noise, her butler trailing behind her like a shadow.Anastasia exchanged worried glances with Jules. "Should we follow?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper."Of course," she replied, heart pounding as they crept behind the curtain of darkness that hung in the hallway. They moved cautiously, peering into the dimly lit corridor. The back door stood ajar, wind howling through the opening, sending shivers down her spine. "Aunt Grey?" Anastasia called, her voice trembling slightly. The absence of an answer sent a fresh wave of unease crashing over her. They hurried to the door, and what they saw sent their hearts racing. Madam Grey lay sprawled on the ground, her eyes wide with terror, the butler kneeling beside her, an expression of shock on his face. "No!" he cried out, his voice filled with a mixture of horror and despair."What happened?" Jules yelled, rushing forward, but Anastasia held him back. Something felt off, the air crackling with a sudden surge of energy. Madam Grey's breath came in ragged gasps. "Anastasia... protect the magic..." she managed to whisper, her voice fading as she reached for her niece. The very life seemed to drain from her as she spoke, and then, with a final shudder, she lay still.Anastasia's heart dropped into her stomach. "No... no, this can't be happening!" She felt the world spin around her, the loss hitting her like a physical blow. Her aunt, the guardian of their family's secrets, was gone."What do we do?" Jules asked, panic in his voice, but Anastasia could barely focus. She felt a rush of grief mixed with a sudden clarity. "We need to get out of here."The butler stood frozen, shock etched across his features. "I didn't—" he began, but Anastasia cut him off."Why didn't you help her?" she shouted, fear and anger surging through her. "What did you do?""I didn't mean for this to happen," he stammered, glancing toward Madam Grey's lifeless form. "It was supposed to be a warning. The magic... it's corrupting.""Corrupting?" Jules echoed, bewildered. "What does that even mean?"Before the butler could answer, a loud crash resounded from deep within the mansion. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and Anastasia's instincts kicked in. "We have to go. Now!"As they stumbled out into the night, the air crackling with an unseen force, Anastasia felt the weight of her aunt's last words settle heavily on her. She was now the protector of their family's magic—a burden she never asked for, thrust upon her in the wake of tragedy. They raced down the pathway, adrenaline fueling their escape, but even as they fled, a shadow loomed behind them, promising that this was only the beginning of the darkness that sought to claim their family's legacy.
