The human species has some peculiarities that make it different from any other sentient species on the planet. Among these characteristics, perhaps the most complex is the human psyche. The mental factor that determines someone's personality, whether that person will be 'good' or 'bad' according to society's consensus.
But a general ideology does not mean that the concept of 'right' or 'wrong' will be the same for me or you, each individual sets his own rules by which he decides to live, and sometimes such limitations are eliminated or changed.
Whether it's because of a traumatic experience, an accident, or even an illness or genetic predisposition, these are just some of the factors that can determine the path in which an individual's psyche will be shaped, and for May Maple, something that might be considered harmless had unimaginable consequences.
From a very young age, May suffered from precocious development compared to other girls her age, and this became evident when she reached physical puberty at the age of 8. This greatly frightened her parents, but especially May herself, who did not understand the changes in her body, such as the premature growth of her breasts while her childhood friends had not even begun to develop them in such a way, or biological events destined to begin in adolescence, such as temperamental changes resulting from the increase in estrogen levels and menstruation.
The changes caused May to be removed from contact with children her own age, both out of fear and protection from her parents. After all, to the uninitiated, May appeared to be a 12-year-old girl when she had not even reached 10 years of age amidst a group of children who seemed younger, and although such a thing was not very relevant to most adults, it was still a curious sight, and the interaction with older boys who approached May with a desire to interact not as friends, but as potential romantic relationships left her increasingly confused.
For despite her mature appearance for her age, May was still a girl who had not even reached mental adolescence.
Years passed, and the isolation and Norman's obligations as a gym leader caused May to develop a dislike for Pokémon, blaming them for the little attention she received from her father, and served as an escape valve for her loneliness. But when Norman asked her if May would be interested in starting a journey through Hoenn when she was 10 years old, she didn't think twice about accepting.
After all, it was her chance to finally see the world and maybe make a real friend, since all her childhood friends had moved away, either by their own decision or by the indirect actions of her parents, and all of this made May feel in need of some kind of attention. She wasn't angry with Norman or Caroline, and she wasn't even jealous of Max, because she understood that he was her younger brother and needed attention and help, but it still hurt to see other families closer to each other, and children with their already defined groups, while she was left alone, with the only kind of attention May received being from much older boys, who longed for something she simply couldn't give: a romantic relationship. Because while May was indisputably beautiful and had a body that matched someone at least 4 years older, her mind was still that of a little girl who had barely begun to reach puberty.
So, at the age of 10, May began her journey, going to catch a Pokémon with Professor Birch. She had no desire to challenge gyms and compete in the local league, but she could handle a single Pokémon if it meant being able to travel around Hoenn, and who knows, even other regions. But everything changed when she met the one who changed her life.
Ash Ketchum.
The first time May met him, she wasn't particularly interested. A boy with a Pikachu on his shoulder, although unusual, wasn't anything impressive. But soon that day, she realized that Ash had more to show than her initial impression had told her. The way he handled the Pokémon in the lab and his pleasant personality made May decide to accompany him, at least until they reached Petalburg.
