The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the iconic railway station in Mumbai, stands proudly with its Gothic architecture, serving as a reminder of India’s colonial past. With eighteen platforms accommodating forty different tracks, it spans across acres of the city, yet often feels inadequate for the many passengers rushing to meet their daily commitments, as well as for the station workers.
A diverse mix of people in various outfits moves in and out of the trains. Some are heading to work, while others are off to school or college. Unlike in many other countries, the noise levels here are strikingly high. Most people do not feel the need to maintain a facade; they express themselves freely, which is something Jungkook appreciates most about this country.
Every individual carries a story; each location has its own narrative, and the nation itself has a rich history to share. It tells the tale of its wealth and resources before they were surrendered, as well as the struggle for its freedom.
While living in London and traveling across India for a month, Jungkook found many similarities. One notable aspect is that train journeys, despite differing interiors, are always chaotic. The lively atmosphere is filled with conversations, laughter, gossip, and music.
Being an optimistic person, he enjoys the vibrant energy around him. Jungkook feels a personal connection to India; his maternal grandfather was Indian. When his mother was a teenager, her family moved to London. He had visited India as a child and fell in love with the country then.
Now, at twenty-five, he has returned to explore India on his own. His parents are also visiting and are currently staying at his mother’s family house in Chennai.
After exploring every corner of Rajasthan, Jungkook is on his way to Chennai. Dressed in his usual black attire, he wears a long black jacket to ward off the December chill. After wandering the streets for hours, he arrives at the railway station. Despite the unpleasant smell of contaminated water in the potholes, he manages to buy sweets for his parents, as they are about to make an important decision in their lives, and sweetness is essential.
He checks his ticket and confirms his seat: a single lower berth next to the door. Although there are faster trains to Chennai, he chooses a regular one to savor each moment of the journey.
After placing his duffel bag and backpack on the upper berth, he settles in. The train is about to start, but the passenger for the upper berth has not arrived yet. Even though it isn’t an air-conditioned compartment, he feels cold. He zips up his jacket, covers himself well, ties his long hair into a man bun, and puts on a beanie, appearing as a dark silhouette with bright eyes.
The speaker crackles, and the creaking sound of the levers echoes as the wheels begin to turn. Jungkook sighs and smiles.
Suddenly, a blonde person comes running, throwing a bag into the moving train. He catches the door handle and races alongside the train on the platform, shouting to someone behind him.
“Come on, run faster!”
“You should eat less, you fatty!”
“Uhh, come on, get in!”
He continues shouting while Jungkook watches the frustrated blonde with curiosity, glancing at the bag he had tossed inside moments before.
“Uhh, you! My laptop is inside!” comes another voice from behind, but Jungkook can’t see the speaker's face.
“Fine! Now get in,” the blonde replies, pushing someone inside. Finally, he turns to face the front, and now Jungkook can see his angelic features.
“Okay, what’s your name?” he asks the person who has just boarded, and Jungkook raises his eyebrows in surprise. Was he helping someone board the train without knowing their name?
The other male says something, but Jungkook can’t catch it. The blonde grows more annoyed.
“No, you! You are traveling with my ticket. You are Park Jimin!”
Jungkook chuckles at the situation. So that was the issue—impersonation. Isn’t that a punishable offense?
“Oh yeah. I forgot."
"Okay. Now go home and see your man."
“Fuck off, you bitch,” the person on the train shouts back without considering the wide eyes around him, while the blonde, who has now stopped running, waves at his friend.
Jungkook chuckles again, taking in their bonding moment, but immediately composes himself when he sees movement near the door, indicating that the other person is coming in. He fixes his gaze outside, not wanting to eavesdrop on them.
"Excuse me," a deep voice suddenly cuts through the air. Jungkook looks up, feeling the voice resonate through him, even without hearing anything else clearly.
His eyes widen, his heart races, and his breathing becomes irregular.
This can't be true, right? Is he dreaming?
