The clinic smelled like antiseptic and faintly of the lemon-scented cleaner they used to polish the floors. It wasn't the most welcoming place, but five-year-old Izuku Monoma clung to his mother's hand, eyes wide with nervous excitement. His heart pounded in his tiny chest, matching the rhythm of his brother Neito's impatient fidgeting next to him.
"Neito, stop bouncing your leg," Inko chided softly, though she was smiling. "You'll wear a hole in the floor."
"I can't help it!" Neito said, his voice carrying the slightest edge of impatience. "I just want to know already! What if we have super-cool Quirks? What if we can, like, fly or shoot lasers?" His blonde hair, which he kept neatly combed, bounced with every motion, reflecting the light that streamed through the clinic's small window.
Izuku glanced up at his brother, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "That'd be really cool. But... what if we don't get any Quirks at all?" His tone was tentative, a quiet reflection of the fear that often gripped him.
Neito turned to him, eyes bright. "Don't say that! We'll definitely get Quirks. I bet yours is gonna be awesome, 'Zuku." He reached over and gave Izuku's shoulder a playful shake, earning a small, giggling protest from his younger brother.
Inko's smile softened as she looked down at them. "Whatever Quirks you have, you'll still be my boys. And I'm sure they'll be amazing." She gave both of their hands a gentle squeeze, but there was a flicker of worry in her eyes. It was a big day for them. Everyone knew that the world revolved around Quirks, and the Monoma brothers had been eager—almost desperate—to find out what their future held.
The door to the examination room creaked open, and a short, middle-aged man with graying hair with classes. He had a clipboard tucked under his arm and a friendly, if slightly distracted, smile on his face.
"Good afternoon, Monoma family. I'm Dr Garaki. I see we're here for a little quirk assessment today, hmm?" he said, looking over at the two boys. "Are you both ready?"
Izuku's hand tightened around Inko's, but he nodded quickly, swallowing the nervous lump in his throat. Neito, on the other hand, was practically vibrating with excitement, and he gave an enthusiastic, "Yup!"
Dr. Garaki chuckled. "Well, let's not keep you waiting any longer. We've already got the X-rays and blood samples processed, so we've got a pretty good idea of what we're dealing with. But first, I want to ask—how are you both feeling? Nervous? Excited?"
"Both!" Neito exclaimed, grinning. "Mostly excited though."
Izuku hesitated, then said quietly, "Mostly nervous..."
Dr. Kaneda's eyes softened. "That's perfectly okay, Izuku. There's nothing wrong with being a little scared. But I promise, we're going to make sure you understand everything by the time you leave today." He glanced at Inko, who gave him a reassuring nod.
"All right," the doctor continued, flipping open the clipboard. "Let's start with you, Neito. Your Quirk is... well, it's quite interesting. It seems you have the ability to temporarily copy other people's Quirks through physical contact. That means if you touch someone who can, say, control fire, you'll be able to control fire for a short while, too."
Neito's eyes widened, and he looked up at Inko with barely-contained glee. "Really?! I can use other people's Quirks? That's so cool!"
Dr. Kaneda nodded, but his expression grew a bit more serious. "It is very interesting, but there are some limitations. From what we can tell, you can only hold one copied Quirk at a time, and the effects don't last very long—maybe five or ten minutes, at most. Also, you can't copy any Quirks that involve major physical changes. So, no copying someone who has wings or a tail, for example."
