As Lewis and Samuel followed Lucy through the bustling streets of Cinderellasberg, the town's charm enchanted them more with every step. Glittering towers rose above cottages with colorful rooftops, and the scent of fresh pastries wafted from bakeries lining the cobblestone paths. Musicians played cheerful melodies on every corner, and even the birds seemed to sing along.
"This place is something else," Samuel murmured, marveling at the spotless streets and the people who waved as they passed. He looked over at Lewis, who was gazing around with a mix of wonder and a hint of apprehension.
Lucy led them through the heart of the village to a grand set of gates adorned with intricate carvings of pumpkins, stars, and a delicate slipper engraved at the top. Beyond them lay the royal castle—a magnificent, towering structure that gleamed like freshly polished glass under the sun.
"Prince Charming and Cinderella would love to meet you both," Lucy said, opening the gates and gesturing for them to follow.
They walked down a winding path lined with rose bushes, finally arriving at the castle's main entrance. As they stepped inside, Lewis felt a chill run down his spine, excitement mingled with unease. He wasn't sure what to expect from a meeting with Cinderella herself. After all, he held what he believed to be a piece of her glass slipper in his pocket—a shard that felt far more precious than gold.
As they strolled through the picturesque streets of Cinderellasberg, Lewis and Samuel noticed Lucy seemed a bit distracted, constantly glancing at her surroundings and adjusting her pace to make sure they were walking in line. She had the same graceful elegance as her mother, Cinderella, but something about her seemed... tense, as though she were carrying an invisible weight.
"Everything okay, Lucy?" Samuel asked, raising an eyebrow.
She nodded quickly, though her expression betrayed her anxiety. "Yes, everything's fine. It's just that... well, I want everything to be perfect. It's important for my family to meet you, and, well... I want you to leave with a good impression of us."
Samuel and Lewis exchanged a quick glance, sensing there was more to her concerns.
Lucy sighed and smoothed her dress as if tidying her thoughts as well. "Growing up in Cinderellasberg, people expect so much from you. We're supposed to be the town that represents grace, kindness, and strength. And as my mother's daughter, everyone just assumes I'll embody all of that too. Every step, every word—it's all scrutinized."
Lewis gave her a sympathetic look. "So, you feel like you always have to be perfect?"
Lucy nodded, a small smile breaking through her tension. "Yes, exactly. I know it sounds silly, but I feel this enormous pressure to live up to my mother's legacy. She's been so good at balancing grace and strength that I'm terrified of making any mistake that might tarnish her reputation."
Samuel looked thoughtful. "I get that, honestly. My mother, Snow White, is always reminding me of the importance of being a good ruler and of leading with a gentle hand. She's kind, thoughtful, and forgiving—but sometimes, it feels like there's no room to make a mistake. Like any imperfection reflects badly on her."
Lucy nodded in understanding. "Exactly. My mother always says that perfection isn't expected, that she just wants me to be myself. But she doesn't know the way people talk... I feel like I have to live up to the story that everyone's told about her."
Lewis gave her a reassuring smile. "For what it's worth, you don't need to try so hard to impress us. We came here to find answers, not judge you—or your family."
"Thank you, Lewis," she replied softly, her smile turning genuine. "But I can't help it. I want to make sure everything goes smoothly today, especially with you two here on such an important quest. My parents will want to help you however they can, and it'll mean a lot to them that you're here."
