The gargoyle is a fantasy and horror monster inspired by the appearance of bestial grotesque statues in architecture - particularly those sculpted to decorate the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris during its 19th-century reconstruction, rather than actual medieval statuary. Its name is based on the gargoyle architectural element, whose name is often incorrectly conflated with that of monstrous grotesques as a whole.
ART PROCESS
My biggest challenge tackling this creature was it's facial features; due to its close similarity to a human face, it required a few studies to be able to pull off the look, however I don't think it was as successful as I'd wish.
Recreating the lips were the hardest and required the most fine tuning, but it still remained very faithful to the original picture.
This drawing was unfortunately drawn into a much cheaper paper than the previous ones, thus the scruffier look to the lines. If I could revisit this piece, I would've changed my approach in how I applied the shading lines and aim for a much cleaner look.
