Being Stuck

I was so excited! I had just been cast for a part in the play and tonight was the night I was supposed to go on stage. I spent all day practicing and preparing. I was determined to put on a great show, not just for my audience, but for my family that would be coming to see me perform. The day had been perfect. I woke up early, made myself breakfast, and then headed off to the theatre. My fellow actors were all there. I said hello to them as I began to put on my costume and apply my makeup.

But just as I finished getting ready, a nurse came rushing in and interrupted our rehearsal. "Zooble has appendicitis!" She cried. "We need someone to donate blood right now!"

All the other actors looked at me. "You're the only one with type O negative," one of them said. "You have to do it."

I protested. I had never donated blood before, and I was nervous about the process. But my fellow actors assured me it was a simple procedure and that I would be perfectly fine.

So I reluctantly agreed to donate my blood.

The nurse led me to a private room where the blood donation process would take place. Zooble was already there, laying on the bed.

The nurse began prepping my arm. I felt a tiny pinch as she inserted the needle into my vein. She then handed me a remote control that allowed me to regulate the speed at which my blood was being extracted.

I watched as the bright red liquid flowed into a plastic bag. It was an odd feeling, seeing my own blood flow out of my body. I felt a little dizzy and lightheaded, but the nurse assured me this was normal.

I think after a few minutes, when I got back to the stage, a notification said that they kept losing my blood in the tubes and kept having to reinsert the needle, so I would need to go back...again.

And again. And again.

When I was finally done, I returned to the theatre to find that the play had already started and my part had already passed.

I was devastated. All that work and practice for nothing. I watched the rest of the play in silence, my heart sinking.

But then something happened that made me feel even worse.

As we did our bows....

Everything went dark.
