As Jade and I settled into our seats at the dinner table, the air was thick with anticipation. My parents exchanged glances, and I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. What could they possibly want to share that required both of us to be here?

"Okay, so, we have some news," my mom began, her voice steady but warm. "Your dad and I have been offered an incredible opportunity—"

"We're moving," my dad interrupted, cutting straight to the point.

The words hung in the air, and for a moment, I was too stunned to respond. My heart raced as I glanced at Jade, who looked equally shocked.

"Moving? As in... away?" I finally managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes," my mom replied gently. "It's a big decision, and we wanted you both to hear it from us first."

"What about school? What about my friends?" I protested, my thoughts racing. I had finally settled in, and now everything was about to change.

"We'll be moving at the end of the summer," my dad added. "You'll have time to say goodbye to your friends and finish your summer plans."

Jade reached over and squeezed my hand. "This can't be happening," I muttered, feeling the walls close in.

"But it's a great opportunity for your father's career, and for us as a family," my mom said, trying to reassure me. "We'll be closer to your grandparents, too."

"Yeah, but... this is my home!" I shot back, frustration bubbling to the surface. "This is where I finally felt like I belonged!"

"I know, sweetie," my mom said softly, her eyes filled with understanding. "But think about the adventures we can have in a new place. It could be exciting!"

Exciting? I couldn't see anything exciting about leaving everything behind. I looked at Jade, her expression a mix of sympathy and concern. "What are you thinking?" I asked, needing her support more than ever.

"I... I don't know," she said quietly. "Maybe it'll be okay? You'll make new friends, and I'll visit all the time."

The thought of Jade visiting felt comforting, but it didn't erase the pit in my stomach.
After dinner, we retreated to the living room, the reality of the news weighing heavily on my mind. I stared out the window, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink, my thoughts swirling like the clouds above.

"Hey," Jade said softly, breaking the silence. "Why don't we plan our summer adventure now? Let's make the most of it before you go."

I turned to her, a small smile creeping onto my face. "You're right. We should do something unforgettable."

"What about a road trip?" Jade suggested, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Just us, some music, and a map. We can hit up all the cool spots."

"That sounds amazing," I replied, feeling a flicker of hope. "We could visit the beach, the amusement park... and even that art fair we always talked about!"

Jade nodded enthusiastically, and I felt a surge of determination. If I was going to leave this place, I was going to leave with memories I'd cherish forever.

As we began brainstorming our adventure, I realized that while change was daunting, I didn't have to face it alone. With Jade by my side, I felt ready to embrace whatever lay ahead, one step at a time.
