I groan and open my eyes slowly, my body is in so much pain, I can't speak. I notice right away the teenage girl, around 17, looking down at me. Her black eyes dart across my features, her nose and mouth covered by a surgical mask, which she pulls down. Her caramel colored skin is flawless, pointy elf ears poking out from her long, curly black hair. A braid runs over the middle of her scalp, dividing her hair equally. She shrugs her black leather jacket off, revealing a maroon t-shirt.
"Here, Princess." she says softly, sitting me up gently and wrapping the jacket over my shoulders. "You need to keep warm."
I look at her with a grateful expression. She smiles in return, a soft beautiful smile.
A soft knock catches my attention, causing me to glance over. A pale boy stands in the doorway, a worried expression on his freckled face. He's about the same age as the girl, his brown hair messy, sticking out in all different directions. He's wearing a black hoodie and jeans, both pieces of clothing ripped and dirty.
In his hand is a small glass cage, a miniature little boy sitting in it. He looks similar to the pale boy, a little smile on his face. He wears a black turtleneck and jeans, yet his clothes are in perfect condition.
I wave quietly.
"How are you feeling, Princess?" The first boy whispers, grabbing a glass of water from the bedside table I didn't notice before. I take the water and drink it, then clear my throat.
"I'm alright. Who might you three be?"
"O-oh. I'm Lucian." The boy says, bowing slightly. The girl speaks up next, also bowing.
"Rosalina. Pleased to meet you, Princess."
I bow my head. "It's a pleasure to meet you both. And the boy in the cage?" I point to the miniature boy.
Lucian rubs his head nervously. "This is my little brother, Amorus. We keep him in here for....reasons."
I cock my head to the side. "What reasons?"
He looks away. "Your Majesty, he is a demon. Ever since the demons and angels went to war, his demonic abilities have tripled. If he isn't in this form, he tends to lose control a bit."
I swing my legs over the queen sized bed I was laid on, standing slowly. Rosalina rushes to my side, helping me stand. I thank her and walk to Lucian and Amorus. I hold my hand out for the cage, causing Amorus to jump up and down excitedly. I can't help but giggle, carefully taking the cage and inspecting it closer.
Amorus puts his little hands against the glass, a big smile on his face. I smile back and look at Lucian. "He looks harmless."
"We were going to make him your protector, Princess Aine." Rosalina says behind me. I blink and turn around.
"May I see his true form, if he is to be my protector?"
"Of course." She says, taking the cage from my hands and opening the top, placing it on the floor. Amorus jumps out, a thick black fog surrounding him. He slowly grows into a man, his body toned and muscular. His ears are long and pointy, his complexion tanned. His eyes glow red, the veins around them turning black. A dragon tattoo reaches from his shoulder to his chest, an old scar covering his shoulder and back. His jeans fit perfectly on his hips.
He smiles, his canines sharp as he reaches a hand to me, his nails sharp, the tips of his fingers blackened. "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Princess." he says, his voice deep and rumbling.
I tilt my head and move closer, inspecting his physique. When I get to his backside, I poke his shoulder roughly. He spins around, a frown on his face.
"That's rude."
I narrow my eyes. "Face forward, please. In order to ensure that you are to indeed be my bodyguard, I need to make sure you are strong and able to take simple attacks."
He rolls his eyes and turns back around. I flick my wrist, an angelic dagger appearing. I grip the handle before my hand shoots out, aiming for his shoulder. He instantly vanishes, materializing behind me, his hand grabbing my wrist, his voice quiet. "Careful. You could hurt someone with pure angelic steel."
I suck in a breath. "Release me, demon."
Amorus chuckles and lets me go, stepping back. "Apologies. Simply had to protect myself."
I turn to him, my arms crossed over my chest. "You will do as my guard. You're quick."
He smirks. "Thanks. I'm excited."
I nod and turn back to Rosalina and Lucian. "Thank you both. I am grateful you have taken me in."
Lucian and Rosalina glance at each other, then back at me.
"Your Majesty-"
"Please, just call me Aine." I smile.
Lucian's black eyes widen before he quickly looks away. "R-right. Aine, we didn't want the bandits to see you. If they had..."
Rosalina frowns. "It would have been bad. Luckily, we saw you climbing out of the window. By the way, I wanted to ask about that."
It's my turn to look away, causing Amorus to step around and tilt my head to face him. "As your protector, I need to know what exactly I'm protecting you from."
My eyes widen before I pull away. "My mother."
"The queen?!" Rosalina squeaks. "Why her?"
I frown. "I guess I should tell you all."
