Chapter three: Gifts

( after twenty days )

"What about this?" An almost seventeen Shubman asked a seventeen year old Sara. "It's pink, Sayali likes pink,"

Sara rolled her at the princess themed pencil holder.

"She likes pink but she's not a child, Shubman,"

"You roll your eyes a lot," he pointed out.

"Okay, and?"

"Nothing," he shrugged, standing beside her as she went through greeting cards.

"How's this?" Sara asked, showing him a pink coloured 'happy birthday' card.

"Let's not give her something which is of zero use," Shubman said, clicking his tongue.

"You know what? You're actually right. A purchased card is a bad gift for someone our age," The two roamed in the gift shop, trying to find something for their friend whose birthday party they were heading to. After five minutes, when Sara was browsing in the nailpaints rack, Shubman arrived.

"I'm hungry," he announced and Sara looked at him. "Let's buy chips,"

"Don't you have a dabba with you today? You shouldn't be eating junk food after practice," Sara said and Shubman groaned.

"Yaar Sara, I told Papa to cut fruit for me to eat but he forgot and I didn't have time as I was completing that stupid history assignment," he explained his sorrow and Sara sighed.

"You'd like fruit? Then let's buy fruit, you have five rupees extra right?" Shubman nodded unwillingly and Sara smiled. "Yeah, we'll get some bananas,"

"But I could get chips,"

"Shouldn't you be eating healthy food as a serious sportsman?" Sara air quoted the words 'serious sportsman' and Shubman sighed.

"All right, did you choose a gift for Sayali?"

"Yes, we should give her this red coloured nail paint," she said, showing him the bottle.

"Alright, cool, let's leave now, we are late,"

"Ho re baba, jauya" (Yes let's go)

The two paid for the bottle of nail polish which costed ₹50 and as decided earlier, Shubman had only extra five rupees left for gifts which he could use to buy bananas.

They went to a street vendor- 'Sharad Kaka' who sold fruit in front of the gift shop. The gift shop and Sharad Kaka's cart of fruits was in the same area as their college which was a ten minute walk from their respective houses.

In the next ten minutes, the duo reached Sayali's house for the party.

Shubman increased the speed of his car, racing towards the shop he was supposed to meet Sara. He cursed loudly as he got a red signal. She's going to kill me. Again.

Sara Gupte.

His thoughts wandered back to her. Her voice, her scolding him, her constant annoyance. A laugh left his lips as he remembered when they met the last time.

Besan ke ladoo. She was so mad at me- rightfully so. But when she smiled, God- I'm crazy.

Her smile IS very beautiful, though.
