Bon took a deep breath, running her fingers over the smooth wood of her now-empty desk. Just a few hours ago, she'd been the training administrator here, responsible for schedules, data, and coordinating training programs. It was decent work—steady, sensible, and safe. But today marked her last day in this role, and she was about to step out into something unknown.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A text from her mom: Proud of you, Bonnie. God's got something big for you.
Bon smiled, her heart swelling. Her mother's faith was unwavering, especially when it came to Bon's choices, and today, Bon needed all the support she could get.
For months, she had mulled over with the idea of leaving. She was good at her job, but it didn't make her feel alive. Her real love was in writing and creating stories, even if they only lived in her journals or her laptop. And then there was her mom's baking business, where she'd started helping out here and there. In those moments, surrounded by family and the warm smell of fresh muffins, she'd felt something she hadn't felt in a long time—purpose.
As she left the office for the last time, a strange mix of excitement and fear bubbled up inside her. She was nervous, but she was also hopeful. This decision felt so much bigger than a career change; it felt like a calling.
The first few days after leaving her job felt unreal. Bon still woke up early, just as if she needed to catch the bus, but now her mornings were her own. She spent them journaling, praying, and thinking about what this new chapter might hold. At the bakery, she jumped right in, helping her mom with the day-to-day work—measuring, decorating, and packaging.
While they worked side by side, Bon's mind buzzed with possibilities. She hadn't put any big ideas into action yet, but she sensed there was more she could bring. She saw the bakery as more than just a business; it was a place of warmth and connection, and maybe, she thought, there was a way to reach people beyond the delicious treats.
Her mom noticed the spark in her, encouraging her to dream. "You're not here just to help with baking, Bonnie," her mom said one evening, as they wiped down the counters. "This is as much yours as it is mine. Take your time. You'll find your way."
Bon felt a quiet confidence growing, a sense that God was leading her to something meaningful—one step at a time. On the fifth day, beaming with hope, she took out a notebook her previous employer had customized for her themed with psalm 37 verse 5.
"I will fill this up," she said. "With all my ideas. I know God has something great planned out with this journey and I will bear front-seat witness to it."
Bon felt a lump rise in her throat. She didn't want to let anyone down, or herself, but the voice of doubt lingered in her mind. What if I made a mistake?
One evening, a week after her resignation, Bon found herself alone on the couch, sipping tea and staring at her notebook, which was slowly filling with ideas and little stories. The house was quiet, but inside, her mind was alive, and for the first time, she wasn't afraid. She prayed,
"Lord, I don't know where this is going, but I know You brought me here. Help me trust that You'll guide me." That prayer became her anchor.
Every idea, every story, and every pastry order became a part of something bigger—a journey of faith, courage, and grace. She knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but she also knew she wasn't walking alone.
