"Is that my big Jessie!" My grandma happily shouted as she saw me enter our house.I smiled and waved, beyond grateful that my grandma was now staying with us. "Ciao Nonna, how are you?"
She squished me into the hardest hug, knocking the air right out of me. "I'm wonderful; now tell me about school, bella." Her wrinkled green eyes lit up as she asked about my day.
"Oh, it was good." I was purposely vague; who knows what Nonna would do if she found out I had detention?
She pinched my cheek with her hand. "Then why did the school call saying you had detention today?!"
Busted.
"Ow, ow, okay, I get it." She released me, and I chuckled at her scrunched-up face. "I didn't do anything bad; I was just on my phone, and the teacher picked on me."
She shook her head and ran her fingers through her short white hair. "Ma, kids these days are so addicted to those stupid phones. Your lucky, you know; back then, if I was caught not paying attention, the teachers would whack me with a ruler."
"Sorry Nonna." I put on my best puppy eyes and went to hug the shorter old woman that she gladly accepted. "I'm still your favorite, right?"
"Shh, of course you are. Now go get out of my face and do something while I cook." She shoved me away while holding a wooden spoon. "When your father and your siblings get back, we are going to visit your mother."
I smiled. "Okay, perfect, I'll just be busy in my room... not on my phone."
"Ma donna." She mumbled while shuffling around for ingredients.
About an hour passed by before my siblings got back from the school bus, stomping into our house, making their presence known, with my dad right in tow.
After eating my Nonna's delicious dinner as a family, we all squished together in my dad's trusty van, ready to go visit our mother.
Immediately beeps, clicks, and shouting were heard as we stepped foot into the local hospital my dad works at. I've always hated coming here, and we come here often because of mom. Her heart is extremely weak; it's been that way since I was a little kid, but recently it's gotten worse. Her heart can no longer sustain her body well enough without the help of machines. She can't leave the hospital until she gets a heart transplant, but none of the donors have been a match so far.
But she's the most positive woman I know. She won't let her situation stop her from smiling, and she certainly didn't let her stop having all of us.
"Try not to flip the whole room upside down when you guys go in." My dad chuckled as my two younger brothers wrestled past each other, desperately trying to beat one another to mom's door first.
Julius won and immediately twisted the handle open, shoving past it with all his might. "Ma!" He jumped at her for a hug, with Dante following close behind. My brothers have always looked just like my mom, with their wavy, dark brown hair and honey eyes.
My mom's tired orbs lit up at the sight of us, and she welcomed us all with open arms and big, suffocating hugs. "Get over here, you little troublemakers."
Laughter was heard from my siblings as she smothered us in loving kisses. "So, did you guys bring me anything sweet?" Her eyes were hopeful.
The youngest of us all, little curly-haired Camilla, revealed the little paper bag hidden behind her back. "Surprise! Just for mama." She handed our mom a strawberry jelly filled donut from Tim's. They're her absolute favorite; she loves the powdery mess that comes with eating them.
