Six years ago, I saw the world crash in front of my naked eyes. My father died of cancer and mother came next of the same year with an unclear reason. My twin brother was gone missing. I don’t know if he’s still alive or not, but there’s always this feeling inside of me that believes he’s still out there, somewhere.
Now, it’s just me and my younger sister, living on our own. Whether we like it or not, we have to minimize what’s left for us by our parents. We couldn’t waste a cent and we learned to stay together in the worst and best times.
“OH MY GOD!“ I jumped out of the bed and hurriedly went down a flight of stairs to check on my younger sister in the kitchen. She tried to cook on her own but the room turned into a mess.
“Why are you shouting so early in the morning?” She asked me innocently. She was sitting on the dining table while munching on her burned hotdog and egg.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?” I scolded her and pretended to be so serious in front of her while I was trying to hold myself from laughing on the mess she made on the kitchen.
Oh my innocent sister. She explained to me how peaceful I looked like while I was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake me up because of that. She cares for me too. I love her.
I never wanted her to cook on her own. It only turns into a mess every time she tries to and I don’t want her to wake up so early. I want her to take as much rest as she can. It’s my duty to do all the cooking.
“Alright!” She shook her head and continued eating.
I patted her head gently and kissed her there. “Please don’t do that ever again. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
She smiled her ever so charming smile on me but I know deep inside, she’s going to do it again. She’s such a brat.
“If you want to learn how to cook, just tell me. I’ll teach you.” I left her in the dining table and scurried to take a bath. After changing into my school uniform; I dashed down and ate a piece of bread and a cup of cold milk.
“Jinny, are you done? Let me do your hair.” I grabbed a comb and stood behind my sister who was staring after the mirror for almost five minutes.
“You always do my hair and I love it.” She smiled on me from the mirror and I reciprocated her smile.
Early every morning, my routine is to cook food for my sister, fix her things, iron her uniform, fix her hair, and then after she’s done, I fix myself. I always put her first before I do anything for myself. She’s the only one left for me and I want her to live like before, when we still had our parents.
When I arrived in school, I headed straight to the library. I love reading books. In it, I find a world where I can breathe and just be myself. I can relax and forget all the problems for a while but today was quite different. The ‘Prince’ is on the library, sleeping. I rolled my eyes. Really, just because you’re the grandson of the owner, you could just sleep in the LIBRARY.
I sighed as if I will never sigh in my entire life ever again. “Such unlucky day.”
After stomping away the library, Alexander peeped from the table he was sleeping on and heard me hiss about him sleeping on the library. “Who’s that girl that woke me up? She’s going to get unlucky for the whole year.” He snorted and slumped back onto the table.
On the hallway, I saw my sister. I approached her but she wasn’t able to see me coming her way. I grabbed her arms, and notified her of my presence. She was just ignoring me and she started looking around as if she was looking for someone else.
“Hey!” I shouted at her. Everyone around the hallway turned to look at us and she started to notice me.
“Please don’t shout at me. Get out of my way. I’m looking for someone.” She shoved me out and took a step past me.
“Who are you looking for?” I asked her.
“I’m looking for a guy named Alexander Xiu.” She whispered. As I heard the name, my eyes tried to get out of my own skull and I swallowed hard to get them back in place.
“Why are you looking for him?” My lips dried and it began to tremble. Oh no. I don’t like the sound of this.
“Actually, I have been keeping something from you.”
