Josh was already at the cafe when Emily and Scott arrived.
"Over here, guys!" They heard him shout from the rear corner of the cafe. It was the middle of the lunch rush, and the place was full. The pair arrived at the table as the waitress laid three menus down.
"I'll be back in a few to take your orders." She turned on her heel and headed back to the kitchen.
Emily leaned back and grabbed an empty chair from the table behind her. "No one's using this, are they?" She asked the couple sitting there.
"No," the elderly gentleman responded. "Go ahead and take it, dear."
Emily thanked them and pulled the chair up to their table.
"My little brother Jordan is coming." Emily explained as she settled the chair in place. "Eddie was telling him how cool it was seeing the poor kid pulled up the other day. He wants to join the team."
Josh looked concerned. "How little, Emily? We don't need any little kids running around with us. This could be dangerous."
"Don't worry, Josh," Scott replied. "He's Em's little 18 year old brother. He graduated this year. He's a good kid. Takes things seriously. Not like Eddie."
At that last dig, Emily elbowed Scott in the ribs.
"Well," Scott defended himself. "Eddie's got a wild hair up his ass, Em. You know he does."
"Yeah," she came back with. "But he's still my brother." She punctuated the statement with another jab to the ribs.
"Yeah," a voice came thundering over the noise of the crowd. "And I ain't that little either."
With everyone else seated, Jordan towered over the group. Once he sat down, he was still several inches taller than either of the other boys.
"Look, I know Eddie was a bit of a jerk the other day, but I'm not Eddie." Jordan snagged Emily's menu and ran his eyes up and down it. "You know we're all hunters in the Marchesi household. I know this shit is serious, and I want to be part of it. I heard about the mess this thing left up at the Maple Street cemetery. We can't sit back and let Barney Fife and his pals mess around until half the town's dead. We need to get on top of this. Fast."
Josh looked at Scott. Scott looked back at Josh.
"Welcome aboard!" They said in unison.
"Aw, come on Dad," Dan pleaded with his father. "Billy's family's gonna be right there at Kershaw. It's not like we'd be kidnapping him."
"I didn't say 'No', Daniel," Sam Calhoun replied. "I said we have to clear it with his parents first. I'll call them tonight and see how they feel about it."
"God!" Dan continued. "It's not like he's a little kid or some shit."
"Language, Daniel." His mother scolded, walking in from the hallway. "And yes, he is a little kid. And you're not much older."
