I woke up in a bed too soft to be my own. I pulled my knees up to my chest and clutched the blanket tighter. I moved to turn around but as I did this, I felt a ripping sensation shoot up my back. I rolled out of the bed, screaming in pain. Without thinking I pulled off the T-shirt I was wearing and my breath hitched as I saw it was soaked through with blood.
''MOM!'' I screamed, without thinking. My hand flew to my back and I buckled over, dry heaving, as I felt my hand enter a long gash. I heard footsteps pounding up the stairs but I was in too much pain to realise that those footsteps were too heavy to be my mother's. I scrambled back painfully as a man burst into my room. His mop of brown hair flew behind him as he sped to my side. I vaguely remembered who he was but didn't think about it for long.
''My back,'' I heaved. He stayed calm as he lifted me up onto the bed, lying me on my stomach. I felt his hands pressing the wound closed and I screamed in agony. A burning feeling ripped across my back and I pressed my face into the pillows to suppress another roar of pain.
"Alice," he called. "Alice it's fixed, it's healed. Your body just reopened your wounds from earlier while you were transitioning! It's normal," he soothed. My head spun and I thought I was going to be sick. He was a psychopath for sure. He had this sick twisted reality that he had made for himself and now he wanted me to be part of it. I groaned and felt a sob rise in my throat.
The pain finally subsided and I breathed out in relief before my eyes flew open in shock. My hand scratched at my back, searching for evidence of the wound I had felt only seconds ago. I looked to the ground and sure enough, my T-shirt was lying on the floor, soaked in blood. I sat up quickly and my hands flew out, pushing the guy off of my bed. He smacked against the wall, leaving a deep dent in the concrete. I shook my head and looked at my hands. They were foreign to me. Normal me couldn't do that.
''No, no, no, no,'' I yelled, clawing at my hair. ''This isn't real.'' I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed my hands over my face. The events of the past few days were all coming back to me, the accident, my mother, the morgue, the guy who-
''YOU!'' I screeched, launching myself off the bed. I landed on top of the man I remembered to be 'Gabriel'.
''You did this to me,'' I grabbed his shoulders and shook him hard. His head smacked against the wall and his eyes rolled back in his head. I started hitting him. I was hitting him so hard but I couldn't stop. Blood spilled down his face like tears and yet I still couldn't find it within me to stop. I felt tears spill down my cheeks as I screamed one word over and over.
Why?
Gabriel's mouth opened and shut like he was trying to say something. It was as his words sounded that I stopped. Something within me broke as I heard his voice. Just two words, bringing me to a complete standstill.
''Please, Alice.''
There was something so familiar about his voice. It was so soft, so gentle that I would've recognised it in a crowd of a thousand people. My hands dropped to his chest and before I could stop myself I was clinging onto him, my face pressed against his neck, sobbing. I felt his arms wrap gingerly around me and I clung onto him harder. Almost like I was clinging on to the last shred of a normal life.
