season 2 ep 2 - earthquake

It was a normal day, I had just arrived back to my hotel after an all night shift, I was performing a Craniotomy on a patient that took longer than expected. I only had a one more day left before my apartment was finally ready but right now all I could think about was getting into my bed even if it was the middle of the day. Opening the door to my room, I placed down my bag, ready to get into bed, when I felt the ground shake.  For my safety, I tried to get under the desk in my room but I want quick enough and the hotel began to tilt, I felt myself fall back onto the wall and the desk and bed followed, keeping me pinned. I couldn't reach my pone in order to call for help, I was slowly being crushed, thankfully it wasn't too heavy but I was still in a great deal of pain.

Sirens was all I could hear coming from outside but I knew by now It was likely that everyone was already evacuated because the hotel was between check in and check out. What if they don't find me in time? They will, i shouldn't worry, I just need to make myself heard. To do this, I bang on the wall and scream at time intervals to not waste my breath. I know what can happen with crush injuries, my breathing is becoming laboured so I don't want to waste my energy.

After Buck and Eddie have rescued the first victim from the hotel they try to make their way out.

I hear footsteps coming along the corridor, outside my room. Finally, help is here, I thought to myself. I scream "HELP" while I bang on the wall behind me.

"Eddie do you hear that?" One firefighter asks the other

"I do" the other replies

"It's coming from in here!" he shouts as he bashes open the door

I smile with hope and I manage mouth help as they enter

"I'm Buck and this is Eddie, we are going to get you out of here, okay?" he pauses and looks to me "How are you feeling?"

"My breathing is laboured, I probably have a few broken ribs. Possible internal bleeding from the impact but other than that I think I'm fine." They both present with shocked faces as if amazed by my knowledge.

"Buck, help me over here, I need to move this bed." Eddie announces

"On it." they both push or pull with all they have and the bed begins to move, I can breathe. the desk is then removed from me and they check my vitals but before they can I speak "pulse is stable, but by breathing is still a little difficult which indicates definite multiple broken ribs."

"You know your stuff." Eddie says with surprise

"I'm a surgeon."

"Oh really? any specific specialty?" The brown haired man asks

"Neuro. I just moved here a few weeks ago."

"Are you okay to walk, it's gonna be a tricky journey?" Buck asks

"I'm okay, thank you. I'm Avery, by the way."

We start walking in order to exit the building, I hold my stomach out of pain and follow them.

The blonde man pipes up "So, you said you just moved here, how come you are staying in a hotel?"

"My apartment is being fixed up so hotel it is." I let out a slight laugh but it hurts.

The other girl with us is named Ali, she starts to worry but Buck comforts her. "Don't worry, abby, we'll get you out of here."

"Ali"

"what?"

"You said Abby, my names Ali."

"uh, yeah, sorry. Umm, Abby is my its complicated." The blonde pauses and looks at me for a moment, I keep the eye contact before he looks away and turns to Ali again "She's in Europe travelling, one of the times I'm actually grateful she's not here. I don't need to worry."

"Having someone to worry about sounds.. nice. All I do is work" Ali states when she turns to me "Avery, you have anyone to worry about today?"

"No, I do not. its just me." I start to feel faint, I wobble in my steps but Buck catches me before I get the chance to fall I stand back up on my feet, feeling slightly better but Buck keeps hold of my waist and I feel butterflies as he does. He turns to Eddie "We got to get her out of here now." I have some strength still so I know I will make it out.

"The stairwell will take too long." he replies to his colleague

"Maybe we don't use the stairwell."

We end up having to use the elevator which is not blocked by debris or an elevator. We all look down and up where the elevator is hanging above us "I like our chances" Buck announces.

Eddie takes Ali down with him while me and Buck wait on the floor above "How you feeling Ali?" Eddie asks

"Not dead yet."

Buck turns to you and you look to him "How you feeling?"

"I've had better days." we maintain the eye contact before he turns his attention back to the other two "You guys are doing great, almost there."

"8 more feet Buck." Eddie shouts up and Buck lowers the rope "Get down here Buck."

"Alright, on my way. You ready?" he asks me

"Lets do it." I grab hold of him with the strength I have left as he lowers us down. I'm sacred and he notices "You're okay. you're okay."

"Okay." I close my eyes for a moment

"Is the building vibrating?" Ali asks as we begin to fall faster

"I got you." Buck says, tightening his grip around me as we quickly go through the elevator doors onto the next floor.

"I told you I liked our chances." he smiles to us and I can't help but smile back.

We all continue walking and make our way out of the building and Buck calls the EMTs over to take me to the nearest hospital. I mouth a thank you to him and smile before I'm gone in an ambulance, he smiles back.

I'm rushed to the nearest hospital and I feel my strength disappear as the adrenaline has worn off, and my tiredness takes over.  They tell me I was lucky with only some broken ribs and slight internal bleeding but I still need surgery.

I'm rushed into surgery and my colleagues recognise me and are happy to see that I'm okay. I wake up after my surgery and I see a tall, gorgeous blonde man standing against the door frame. It's Buck.

"Hey you're awake." He walks closer to my bed and takes a seat next to me.

"Buck? why are you here?"

"I wanted to check up on you, make sure you were okay." he pauses for a moment "I'm glad you are okay."

"Thank you." I pause and keep my eye contact on him "How are you?"

"Great thank you, I'm thinking of moving out of Abby's apartment, maybe get a place of my own."

"Thats great. I mean the fact that you're great not about your girlfriend part."

"I think it may be time to realise she's not coming back."

"I'm sorry Buck."

"Anyway, I just wanted to make sure you were okay and you are so I will leave you to rest." he keeps his eyes on me and he gets up to leave. Maybe there is a connection between us.

"Buck." I say and he stops to look at me, his bright blue eyes shimmer. "Thank you again."

"No problem Avery." he puts his hands in his pockets as he leaves and I keep my eyes on him. I don't want him to leave but I know he has too.
