The air in the apartment felt thick with unspoken words as Y/N stared out the window, watching the city lights flicker in the distance. It had been weeks since Nicholas had truly been present—between press events, rehearsals, and promotional shoots for his upcoming film, he seemed more like a ghost than the boyfriend she once knew.
She glanced at her phone for the umpteenth time, willing it to buzz with a message. They were supposed to have dinner together, but as the clock ticked past seven, she felt the familiar pang of disappointment. She picked up her glass of wine, swirling it absentmindedly, when finally, her phone rang.
"Nicholas," she answered, forcing a cheerful tone.
"Hey, babe! I'm so sorry I'm late. Something came up at the studio," his voice crackled through the line, tinged with exhaustion but layered with excitement. "I promise I'll make it up to you."
"Right," she replied, her heart sinking. "How about you make it up to me by actually showing up for once?"
There was a pause, and she could almost hear him fumble for the right words. "I'll be there soon, I promise."
She hung up, frustration boiling inside her. He always promised.
After what felt like an eternity, Nicholas finally walked through the door, his hair slightly disheveled and a hint of stubble shadowing his jaw. But instead of a warm embrace, he immediately reached for his phone, scrolling through notifications.
"Can we talk about this later?" he asked, barely looking up.
"Yeah, sure," she replied sarcastically. "After all, it's not like I've been waiting for you."
He looked up, surprise etched on his face. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means I've been waiting to see you, Nicholas! You know, your girlfriend? The one who feels like a background character in your life lately?"
"Come on, Y/N. You know this is a busy time for me," he replied, frustration creeping into his voice. "I'm doing this for us!"
"Doing what for us? Ignoring me while you chase after your next award?" she shot back, her voice rising. "I'm tired of being second place to your career!"
Nicholas's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer, tension crackling between them. "You think it's easy for me? I'm under a lot of pressure! But I thought you understood that!"
"Understood what? That I'm not a priority?" Her voice wavered, anger giving way to hurt. "I can't keep pretending that everything is okay when you barely even look at me anymore."
"You think it's all about you? I'm working hard to make a name for myself, and I thought you'd be proud!" His words sliced through her, and she felt the tears prickling at the corners of her eyes.
"Proud? Of what? Of being abandoned?" she retorted, feeling the weight of her emotions crashing down on her. "You're so caught up in this world that you don't see how it's affecting us."
Nicholas's expression softened for a moment, but he quickly masked it with anger. "Maybe if you understood how this works, you wouldn't be so upset. I can't just drop everything for dinner!"
"Maybe if you actually wanted to be here, you would!" she shot back, her voice trembling now.
A heavy silence filled the room, and for a moment, neither of them knew what to say. Finally, Nicholas sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I need space."
"Fine," she said, her heart sinking. "Maybe we both need some space."
With that, he turned and walked out, leaving Y/N standing alone in the dimly lit apartment. The door clicked shut behind him, and the silence that followed felt deafening. She sank onto the couch, the weight of her emotions crashing over her.
Days passed, each one dragging on as Y/N tried to fill the void left by their fight. She threw herself into work, distracted herself with friends, but every laugh felt hollow without Nicholas beside her. Meanwhile, he immersed himself in his film, the stress palpable in every interaction he had.
But both of them felt the absence, the tension that lingered like a ghost. They each reflected on the fight, realizing how far they had drifted and how much they truly valued what they had.
One evening, as Y/N scrolled through social media, she came across a picture of Nicholas at a recent event, flashing that charming smile that had drawn her in so long ago. The caption read, "So grateful for the support of my amazing girlfriend." The pang of longing hit her hard.
She glanced at her phone and hesitated, but finally, she sent him a simple text: "Can we talk?"
Minutes later, her heart raced when his reply came through: "Yeah. I'll be there in twenty."
When the doorbell rang, Y/N's stomach fluttered with a mix of anxiety and hope. She opened the door to find Nicholas standing there, looking worn but determined.
"Hey," he said softly, stepping inside.
"Hey." The awkwardness hung in the air for a moment before Y/N broke the silence. "I'm sorry about how I acted. I just... I felt lost without you."
"I'm sorry too," he admitted, his eyes sincere. "I didn't realize how much I was neglecting you. I got so caught up in everything, I lost sight of what really matters."
"Me too," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know your career is important, but I want to be part of that life with you."
Nicholas stepped closer, closing the gap between them. "You are part of my life, and I don't want to lose you. I promise to do better."
Y/N nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. "I need you to communicate with me, even when things get crazy."
"Deal," he said, a smile breaking through the tension. "How about we celebrate by ordering takeout and binge-watching that show we love?"
"Only if you promise to keep your phone away," she teased.
"Deal," he replied, grinning as he pulled her into a warm embrace.
As they settled onto the couch, laughter and conversation flowed freely again, the fight fading into a distant memory. In that moment, they both knew they could face whatever the world threw at them—together
