Opening up to Lance hadn't been as bad as Keith thought it would be.
It was strange, really. He'd spent so long building walls around himself, convinced that vulnerability would only lead to more pain. But somehow, talking to Lance felt different.
The weight he'd been carrying seemed a little lighter, and for the first time in a long while, he didn't feel quite so alone.
Lance had even brought him breakfast one morning, claiming he knew that Keith hadn't eaten anything and insisting that he at least try.
It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes about how far their friendship had come. Keith had been taken aback at first, caught off guard by Lance's eagerness to care for him.
"Come on, you can't start your day on an empty stomach," Lance had said, grinning as he handed over a slightly squashed breakfast sandwich wrapped in foil. "It's a classic—bacon, egg, and cheese. How can you say no to that?"
Keith had hesitated, eyeing the sandwich warily.
The last time he'd attempted to eat something, it had ended in disaster. But the sight of Lance's hopeful expression stirred something within him, and he decided to give it a shot.
"Fine," he muttered, unwrapping the sandwich with a mix of apprehension and curiosity. As he took a tentative bite, the flavors burst in his mouth, warm and savory. For a moment, he savored the taste, feeling almost normal.
But that moment was short-lived.
A few minutes later, as they sat together on the roof, Keith's stomach started to churn ominously. The flavors that had once been delicious twisted into something unrecognizable, and before he knew it, he was doubling over, retching his guts out.
Sure, it had ended in disaster. But it's the thought that counts!!
After all, no one had ever really tried to care about what he ate or didn't eat before. He'd been on his own for so long, the idea of someone taking the time to look out for him—especially someone as persistent as Lance—felt surreal. Even if breakfast had backfired, the gesture had stuck with him.
Lance's presence had such a positive effect on Keith's life, in ways Keith hadn't expected. It was subtle at first—small things like someone to walk with to class, someone who didn't look at him like he was some untouchable outcast. Someone who actually laughed at his dry humor and didn't flinch at his sarcasm.
Slowly, Keith found himself opening up more. He couldn't remember the last time he'd let himself trust someone this much. Lance had a way of breaking down his walls, piece by piece, with his easy-going nature and relentless optimism. For once, the loneliness that had been such a constant in Keith's life started to fade, replaced by something warmer, something lighter. And though he wasn't quite ready to admit it, he'd started looking forward to mornings and roof lunches—just to see Lance's face light up with that ever-present grin.
