the backstory is the backbone of any character!!! seriously!! in my opinion, i think backstory should be worked on first as backstory affects your character ALOTTTT. i mean, what are we if not a personification of responses to our own experiences?
i would say this is the hardest part because creepypasta also need the extra care towards their backstory, unlike most ocs, so they aren't too cliché or tragic or uninspired... this fandom can be kind of brutal about originality...
firstly, take in account the pastaverse, which is mostly set in the real world (kinda.. if you ignore the paranormal elements...) so try to make your backstory plausible! let's say your character's back story was set in a sci-fi, futuristic, cyberpunk-ish city, that wouldn't work. the only exceptions, i see to this as if it would be unknown to the general public. so let's say your character grew up in a cult in the forest, which could contact actual demons. that COULD work! its secretive! anything that could theoretically happen on earth works.
secondly, you should trying to avoid cliches, and overused tropes like going insane from being bullied for their whole life. I COULD NAME A BUNCH OF BACKSTORIES JUST LIKE THATTT ;( overused tropes can make a story predictable and unengaging. ALTHOUGH, tropes can actually be a good basis if you transform them into something way different!
you must question your backstory as much as you can! ask yourself why. why does this happen? why is it built this way? why is it like this? to actually flesh out the backstory. everything has a reason, its simple cause and effect. without questioning why everything happens, plot points just seem convenient to get from one point to the other. its lazy. but don't go too overboard... creepypastas are usually character based!
