In the weeks that followed their promise to the Source, life seemed almost normal—at least on the surface. But Alex, Ella, and Leo all felt the subtle but unbreakable bond the Source had created between them. It was as if they could sense each other's thoughts, each other's fears and hopes, all tied back to that single decision they had made together. And though they tried to return to their usual routines, the weight of their responsibility was always there, hovering in the background.

One afternoon, Alex noticed something strange as he was heading home from school. The familiar feeling of being watched prickled at the back of his neck, a sense of unease that he couldn't shake. He quickened his pace, glancing over his shoulder every few steps, but the street was empty. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't alone.

He rounded a corner, almost sprinting now, and finally arrived at his front door, slamming it shut behind him. His heart raced, and his mind was flooded with questions. Was someone watching him? Was this part of the bond with the Source, or something more sinister?

The next day, he told Ella and Leo about the incident as they sat in the library, hidden away in their usual corner.

"I don't know, guys," Alex said, lowering his voice as he leaned in. "It felt...wrong. Like someone was tracking me."

Ella frowned, glancing at the medallions in her bag. "You think it could be someone else looking for the Source? Maybe someone who knew about the scar-faced man?"

Leo shivered. "I thought we were done with all that. We activated the seal, made the promise. Isn't that enough?"

Ella shook her head, her face serious. "The Source may be protected, but that doesn't mean people will stop looking for it. There's power in the Source, and power always attracts...shadows."

As if on cue, the lights in the library flickered, casting strange shadows across the bookshelves. They exchanged uneasy glances, the silence between them thick with tension. But before they could say anything, a loud crash echoed from the far end of the library.

They turned, hearts pounding, to see a dark figure standing just inside the door. His face was hidden in the shadows, but there was something unmistakably familiar about the way he moved—a menacing confidence that made Alex's stomach twist.

"No...it can't be," Leo whispered, his eyes wide with fear.

The figure stepped forward, and as the light from a nearby window illuminated his face, they all froze. It was the scar-faced man. He looked different—paler, almost ghostly, with shadows swirling around him like smoke. But his eyes were sharp, focused, and filled with a cold fury.

"I told you," he sneered, his voice low and menacing. "You can't stop me. The Source's power is eternal, and I will claim it...one way or another."

Ella clutched the medallions, her face set with determination. "You're just an echo—a shadow of what you once were. You don't have any power over the Source."

The man's lips curled into a twisted smile. "You don't understand, do you? The Source may be protected, but it's still connected to the medallions. And as long as they exist, I can find a way back to the Source."

Alex's mind raced as he realized the truth: the man hadn't been destroyed when they activated the seal. He had been bound to the Source as an echo—a shadow of himself that could still access the Source's power through the medallions.

"What do you want?" Alex demanded, his fists clenched.

The man took a step closer, his voice dripping with malice. "I want what was taken from me. I want the power of the Source. And if I have to go through you to get it...then so be it."

Before any of them could react, the man lunged forward, his form dissolving into a dark, swirling mist that filled the air. The shadows closed in around them, cold and suffocating, as if they were trapped in a nightmare.

"Run!" Ella shouted, grabbing the medallions and sprinting toward the back door.

Alex and Leo followed, their footsteps echoing through the empty library as they dodged between shelves, the shadows pressing in from all sides. The air was thick with the man's eerie laughter, a sound that seemed to echo from every corner, filling their minds with dread.

They burst out the back door, sprinting across the schoolyard as the shadows swirled around them, relentless and unyielding. Alex felt the man's presence closing in, like a heavy weight pressing on his chest, making it hard to breathe.

"Where do we go?" Leo panted, glancing over his shoulder. "He's not stopping!"

Ella's eyes were wide with fear, but there was a spark of determination in her gaze. "We need to get to the cave. The seal is still there—it might be strong enough to hold him back."

They didn't waste a second, racing toward the forest, their footsteps pounding against the ground as they pushed through the trees. The shadows followed, twisting and coiling through the branches like dark tendrils, reaching for them with an unnatural hunger.

By the time they reached the cave, they were breathless, their lungs burning as they stumbled into the entrance. The familiar hum of the Source greeted them, and the air was filled with a strange warmth, a sense of calm that contrasted sharply with the chaos outside.

Ella held up the medallions, arranging them in a circle on the ground as she whispered a few words under her breath. The medallions glowed, their light merging into a single beam that shot upward, forming a barrier of light around them.

The shadows outside the cave paused, swirling angrily as they met the light, but the man's voice echoed through the darkness, filled with fury.

"You think you can hide from me? I am bound to the Source, and as long as you hold the medallions, you cannot escape me!"

Ella closed her eyes, her hands trembling as she focused on the light. "The Source is a force of protection. As long as we are bound to it, we are stronger than you."

The shadows writhed, and for a moment, Alex thought the man might break through. But the light from the medallions grew brighter, forming a solid barrier that seemed to push the darkness back, inch by inch.

Finally, with a furious scream, the shadows dissolved, leaving nothing but silence. The oppressive weight lifted, and they all collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.

Leo looked at the medallions, his face pale. "Is...is he gone?"

Ella shook her head, her expression grave. "Not gone. Just pushed back. He's bound to the Source now, just like we are. As long as we hold the medallions, he'll keep coming for us, trying to reclaim the power."

Alex clenched his fists, a surge of anger and resolve filling him. "Then we'll keep pushing him back. We made a promise to protect the Source, and that includes keeping it safe from him."

Leo nodded, though his face was still pale. "This is...way more than I signed up for. But if we're really stuck with this, I'm in. No way I'm letting him win."

Ella managed a small smile, her gaze filled with determination. "Then we'll face him together. Whatever it takes."

As they left the cave, the forest seemed quieter, the air charged with a sense of calm. They knew the scar-faced man was still out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for his chance to strike. But they also knew they had something he could never take from them—their bond to the Source, and to each other.

They were guardians, protectors of an ancient power, and they would do whatever it took to keep it safe.
