Ten years ago...

The sun was shining brightly over a small courtyard where people were gathered to mourn the dead man.

Kaif was looking at a seven years old little girl. She was sitting on the floor with some kinds of the neighborhood playing indoors games. His heart constricted for the little girl who didn't know her father had died and she could never see him again.

Kaif and his father Khalil were sitting beside Shabnam. She was Kaif's aunt, his father's little sister.

"Ani I am here with you" Kaif held her in his strong arms and kisses her head lovingly. His gaze was fixed at Nataliya who was happily playing the game unaware of her surroundings.

His aunt had seen many hardships in her life. First she faced a horrible marriage and a divorce just because she wasn't able to birth a child. After her divorce, Shabnam stayed with Khalil, his wife and his little son and later got married to one of Khalil's closet friends who was also a divorcee and father of a young girl.

Shabnam was happy and content in her new life with a loving husband and a lovely daughter. She got for what she yearned over the years in an unhappy marriage, a loving and caring husband and an adorable child.

Shabnam didn't birth Nataliya. She didn't had her in her womb for nine months neither she looked after her when she was a little baby but she had become her mother. There were no hatred or jealousy involved in their relationship, it was pure love.

And now her loving husband had died suddenly of stroke in the early morning when they woke up for fajar prayer.

"You will come with us. I won't leave you here alone" Khalil patted Shabnam's head lovingly.

"How many times you would take me to your home bhai?" She asked brokenly.

"My house is yours too Shabnam. You are my sister. You have every rights to live in my home" Khalil said sadly.

"Her mother might file a case for custody" Shabnam revealed to them.

"How can you say that?" Kaif asked her.

"She called me this morning. Nataliya's custody was settlement between Haider and her. Now when Haider is no more she wants her back" Shabnam started crying once again.

"That ain't going to happen Ani. You have been her mother for five years. That woman left her alone when she was a little child. She has no rights on her. You don't need to worry Nataliya would always be yours!" Kaif patted her hands.

"Don't give her false hopes Kaif! It's a legal issue. If she filed for custody most probably she would win the case after all she is her mother" Khalil didn't want to say it but he didn't want her sister to have false hope.

"Papa stop making her more worried" Kaif shook his head at him.

After a day Nataliya and Shabnam went to Khalil's home where they were welcomed with open arms.

"You don't get tired?" Nataliya sat beside him on the sofa and peeked into the book he was reading.

"Of what?" Kaif asked.

"Of studying" She pointed at the book.

"I am not studying. I am reading!" He explained.

"I don't like studying. But don't tell mama" She leaned at his ear and whispered her little secret.

"Okay" Kaif wanted to laugh at her words but he didn't.

"Can we go to the park?" She asked him after a few minutes. She kept sitting with him who was reading his book.

"I will take you some other day" He said.

"Papa would take me for outing every Sunday. Why is he not coming back!!" Her little eyes filled with tears and she started crying.

"He would be at a better place. That's why he won't come back to you" He wrapped his arm around her little figure and patted her head with his other hand.

He felt very bad for her. She didn't even understand the meaning of life and death yet and her father had already died.

Nataliya's mother tried to get her custody but Nataliya wasn't ready to leave Shabnam at any cost. The judge gave her custody to Shabnam but made her liable to send Nataliya to her mother every week.

The little girl would cry going over to her mother because for her Shabnam was her mother. Khalil was her favorite uncle and Kaif was her only friend who was much older than her but still he was her friend.

"I will come and get you back on sunday. Be a nice girl and don't trouble your mother. Okay!" Kaif sat on his knees in front of her to meet her level and patted her cheeks.

"Okay" She nodded unhappily and kept watching her home through the car's window.

"You have two brothers Nataliya. They are twins. You would love to meet them. Right!" Her mother wiped her tears and cooed her.

"I don't have siblings. I am only child of my parents" She told him unhappily and averted her attention outside the window.

Two days went restlessly and on Sunday Kaif had come to take her back.

"Kaifi!!" She screamed in happiness as her eyes found him coming inside the house. She ran to him and wrapped her little arms around his legs.

"How are you Taliya!" He caressed her hair warmly.

"I was missing everyone. Thank God you came to take me back. I don't like this place" She told him in front of his mother.

"She will get used to it" He said to her mother.

"Of course she has to. I am her mother after all. She belongs to me" She replied seriously.

Kaif nodded at her and held Nataliya's hand and grabbed her bag in his other hand.

Nataliya held his big hand with both of her little hands and left the house without bidding her mother goodbye.

They aren't cousins as they aren't blood relatives. Nataliya is step daughter of Kaif's aunt.

✨Little Nataliya used to call him Kaifi and he used to call her Taliya✨
