The night had settled into a peaceful rhythm, the moon casting its silver glow over the estate, but Queen Damyanti’s heart remained heavy. Despite the music and laughter filling the house, her earlier premonition continued to gnaw at her. Something dark loomed ahead, though she couldn’t put her finger on it.
As the hour grew late, one by one, her children retreated to their rooms. The warmth of family slowly dissipated, leaving behind a quiet stillness. Damyanti stood by the window of her room, her eyes scanning the moonlit garden, searching for signs of what her heart dreaded.
It was then that the door creaked open behind her. She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was—Shivendra, her eldest, always checked on her before going to bed. He entered silently, his presence strong and steady as always.
“Still awake, Maa?” he asked softly, his voice deep with concern.
Damyanti nodded, her gaze still fixed outside. “I can’t sleep tonight, Shiv. Something doesn’t feel right.”
Shivendra moved to her side, his tall frame casting a protective shadow over her. His expression was serious, as it often was when discussing matters of the heart. “What is it, Maa? You’ve been worried since the evening. Raghav told me about your prayers.”
Damyanti turned to face him, her eyes filled with the same concern she had shared with Raghavendra. “It’s just a feeling, my son. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I fear something is coming—something dangerous.”
Shivendra crossed his arms, his brow furrowing as he listened. His protective instincts were always on high alert when it came to his family. “If you feel it, then we must take it seriously. Should we prepare? Call for additional guards? Increase security around the estate?”
Damyanti shook her head. “No, I don’t believe it’s something that can be prevented by physical means alone. This... this feels like a test, a trial that we must face. I just don’t know when or how it will come.”
Shivendra remained quiet for a moment, his mind turning over the possibilities. He was a man of action, someone who liked to have control over every situation, but his mother’s words made him uneasy. “Then we’ll be ready for whatever it is. You’ve raised us well, Maa. We’re prepared to face anything.”
Damyanti smiled softly at his words, though her heart still clenched with fear. “I know you are strong, Shiv. But no matter how much I prepare you, there are some battles that even the bravest warriors can’t foresee.”
Shivendra placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “We’ll face it together, Maa. Just as we always have.”
She nodded, but deep down, she knew this was something different. She could feel it in her bones.
