The soft glow of the afternoon sun filtered through the grand windows of the palace as Queen Damyanti sat in her private chambers, her heart filled with a quiet sense of accomplishment. The storm she had felt in her bones had passed, for now, and her thoughts had turned to the future. More specifically, the future of her sons, Shivendra and Raghavendra. She had known for some time that the next step in their lives was marriage, and today, she had made up her mind.
She had always been a woman of wisdom and grace, and now, as the matriarch of the family, she knew it was time to secure alliances that would not only strengthen their kingdom but bring joy to her sons.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door.
"Come in," Damyanti called, her voice gentle yet firm.
The door opened to reveal Shivendra and Raghavendra, both towering figures of strength and confidence, though their expressions showed curiosity. They had been summoned by their mother but weren’t sure what awaited them.
“Maa,” Shivendra began, his deep voice resonating with calm authority, “you called for us?”
“Yes, my sons,” she said, rising from her chair. “Sit with me. I have something important to discuss with both of you.”
Raghavendra, ever the more lighthearted of the two, smiled playfully. “It sounds serious, Maa. Should we be worried?”
Damyanti chuckled softly as she motioned for them to sit across from her. “No, my dear. There is no need for worry. This is a matter of joy.”
Shivendra and Raghavendra exchanged a glance, curiosity now replaced by anticipation.
“I have been thinking about your futures, about the direction in which our family should grow,” Damyanti began, her tone thoughtful. “Both of you have been dedicated sons, loyal to this family and to the kingdom. It is now time for you to take the next step in your lives.”
Shivendra’s brow furrowed slightly, though his tone remained respectful. “And what would that step be, Maa?”
Damyanti met her eldest son’s gaze with a knowing smile. “Marriage, Shivendra. It is time for you and Raghavendra to marry.”
Raghavendra let out a small laugh, leaning back in his chair. “Marriage? So soon, Maa? Are you certain we’re ready for such a responsibility?”
Damyanti gave him a pointed look, though there was warmth behind her eyes. “You’re more than ready, Raghavendra. It’s time you had someone by your side, someone who will support and challenge you, as a wife should.”
Shivendra, always more serious, nodded thoughtfully. “And you have already made arrangements?”
Damyanti smiled. “Yes, I have. I have spoken with the families of two wonderful young women—Surili and Ashna.”
Raghavendra blinked in surprise. “Surili... and Ashna?”
Shivendra remained silent, though his eyes betrayed the same surprise. He had known of these women, but he had never expected his mother to take such decisive action so quickly.
Damyanti’s gaze softened as she explained. “Surili comes from a noble family that has long been our ally. She is known for her kindness and strength of character, a perfect match for you, Shivendra. She will be a steady and wise partner by your side, both as a wife and as a queen.”
Shivendra’s face remained impassive, but inwardly, he felt the weight of his mother’s words. He had always known that his marriage would be more than just a personal choice—it would be a union that carried the hopes and responsibilities of their kingdom. Surili was someone he respected, though he had never imagined her as his wife.
“And as for you, Raghavendra,” Damyanti continued, turning her attention to her younger son, “Ashna will bring a joy and lightness into your life that you sorely need. She is full of life, compassionate and vibrant. I believe she will bring out the best in you.”
Raghavendra let out a long breath, his mind racing. He had always admired Ashna’s free spirit, her laughter, and the way she seemed to brighten any room she entered. But marriage? It felt like such a distant idea until now.
“Maa, are you sure?” Raghavendra asked, his voice unusually serious. “Ashna and I—we’ve barely spoken. Does she even want this?”
Damyanti reached out and took his hand, her touch gentle but firm. “I have spoken to her family, Raghavendra. She is aware of the arrangement, and she is willing. I would not have suggested this if I did not believe you two could be happy together.”
Raghavendra swallowed hard, his usual playful demeanor slipping away for a moment as he realized the gravity of the situation. “I trust your judgment, Maa. I just... I didn’t expect this so soon.”
Damyanti smiled softly, her eyes filled with understanding. “I know, my son. But life has a way of surprising us, doesn’t it? Sometimes, the things we don’t expect bring us the greatest joy.”
Shivendra, who had been silent for a while, finally spoke, his voice calm but thoughtful. “If this is what you believe is best, Maa, then I will honor your decision. Surili is a fine woman, and I will do my best to be a good husband to her.”
Damyanti’s heart swelled with pride at her eldest son’s words. “I have no doubt that you will, Shivendra. You were born to lead, and Surili will stand beside you with strength and grace.”
Raghavendra, though still a little dazed by the sudden turn of events, nodded. “If Ashna is willing, then I will embrace this too. I suppose it’s time I start taking life a bit more seriously, isn’t it?”
Damyanti laughed softly, reaching out to place a hand on each of her sons’ shoulders. “My dear sons, you have brought me nothing but pride. These marriages will not only strengthen our family but will bring you the happiness and companionship you deserve.”
Shivendra and Raghavendra both smiled, though their expressions held the weight of the changes to come. They knew their mother’s decisions were never made lightly, and though their futures were now set on new paths, they trusted in her wisdom.
As the brothers rose to leave, Shivendra paused for a moment. “When will the ceremonies take place?”
Damyanti’s eyes sparkled. “Soon, my dear. Very soon. The arrangements have already begun.”
Raghavendra shook his head with a soft chuckle. “Of course they have. You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you, Maa?”
She smiled warmly. “That’s my duty, my son. To ensure that you are ready for the future, even if it arrives sooner than expected.”
And with that, the brothers left their mother’s chambers, the weight of their upcoming marriages resting heavily on their shoulders, but also the promise of new beginnings filling their hearts.
