Joong lay wide awake on the cold floor, staring up at the ceiling. Dunk's small house was quiet except for the occasional creak of the floorboards as the night settled in. Despite the warmth of the blankets, sleep wouldn't come. Dunk, on the other hand, was already deep in slumber, the soft rhythm of his breathing echoing through the room.
After tossing and turning for a while, Joong finally sighed, his frustration mounting. He glanced over at Dunk, still sprawled out on the bed, looking comfortable and peaceful. With a soft exhale, Joong made up his mind.
Quietly, he slipped off the floor and padded over to the bed. Dunk’s sleeping form was close, warm, and for some strange reason, the thought of being near dunk offered a strange sense of comfort. Joong hesitated for a moment, then carefully slid under the covers beside Dunk, trying not to disturb him.
The proximity was oddly soothing. The steady rise and fall of Dunk’s chest calmed his restless thoughts. Slowly, Joong drifted into a light sleep, the tension of the night slowly slipping away.
As morning light filtered through the small window, the soft glow gradually roused Dunk from his deep sleep. He stretched, the warmth of the blankets cocooning him in comfort. But something felt... different. There was a weight, a presence, next to him that hadn't been there the night before.
Dunk blinked, confused, and then froze.
He was holding someone. He was hugging joong.
His eyes slowly shifted downward, and there, nestled against his chest, was Joong. The sight of his friend, arms wrapped loosely around him, looking so peaceful in his sleep, caused a strange flutter in Dunk's chest. He hadn’t realized Joong had moved to the bed during the night, and now, the realization that they'd ended up so close left him momentarily speechless.
Dunk's first instinct was to pull away, to let Joong have space, but something kept him rooted in place. Joong looked so serene, his face softened in sleep, the tension from the day before nowhere to be seen. It felt... natural, somehow. Like this moment was supposed to be.
Dunk hesitated, unsure of what to do. Should he wake Joong? Should he pull away? Or was it better to just stay as they were, letting the morning unfold slowly?
But Joong stirred then, a soft groan escaping him as he blinked his eyes open. When his gaze met Dunk's, it took a moment for recognition to settle in.
"Uh…" Joong mumbled, his voice rough from sleep. "What… happened?"
Dunk cleared his throat, a little embarrassed. “Guess we got a little too comfortable,” he said with a chuckle, slowly loosening his hold but not fully pulling away. “I didn’t mean to—”
Joong’s sleepy smile interrupted him. “No, it’s okay,” he said softly. “It’s nice.”
Dunk could feel his heart skip a beat, the words lingering in the quiet morning air between them. There was something in Joong’s eyes, a softness, an understanding, that made Dunk feel oddly at ease.
“Well,” Dunk said, his voice a little quieter now, “I think we should probably get up.”
Joong nodded, but neither of them made an immediate move to separate. For a few moments longer, they just lay there, the weight of the day ahead of them feeling a little lighter with the closeness they shared.
Hey... Dunk,” Joong mumbled, his voice rough with sleep. “Can I... just sleep a little longer? ”
Dunk, who had already rolled out of bed and stood by the window, paused at the sound of Joong’s voice. He glanced over his shoulder, a knowing look in his eyes. He’d noticed the exhaustion in Joong’s face last night, the way his friend had tossed and turned, unable to shake the restlessness. Dunk could tell today wasn’t going to be any easier.
“Yeah, sure,” Dunk replied softly, nodding to himself. “Get some rest. I’ll go make breakfast. You can sleep as long as you need.”
Joong barely muttered a thank you before settling deeper into the pillows, the quiet thrum of the house around him slowly easing him back into sleep. Dunk, with his quiet understanding, moved away without a word, leaving Joong to gather his strength in the calm of the morning.
Dunk quickly freshed up, had a bath which would erase his sleep and then moved quietly through the kitchen, the soft hiss of the pan the only sound as he cracked a couple of eggs into the skillet. The sizzle filled the room as the eggs began to cook.
Joong stirred again, his voice still heavy with sleep. "Hey, Dunk..." he called out, blinking at the ceiling. "You got any clothes I can borrow? I didn’t bring any with me."
Dunk, already busy frying the egg in the kitchen, didn’t miss a beat. "Yeah, I’ve got some stuff in the drawer. Help yourself." He flipped the egg and adjusted the heat. "I’ll make breakfast—take your time."
Joong grumbled his thanks before shuffling off to the bathroom. Dunk smiled to himself, grateful for the quiet, simple routine of the morning. As the egg sizzled and the coffee brewed, he set the table, waiting for Joong to finish up.
Dunk finished setting the last plate on the table, the smell of eggs filling the air. He glanced over at the kitchen door just as Joong emerged, fully dressed, his hair still damp from the shower.
"Quick," Dunk commented with a smile, placing the coffee mugs down. "I thought you’d need more time."
Joong slid into his chair, already looking more awake. “I didn’t want to keep you waiting,” he said, reaching for a fork. “Thanks for breakfast.”
“No problem," Dunk replied, taking a seat across from him. "Eat up. You need it."
Joong gave a small nod, digging into the food. The simple breakfast felt like the perfect start to a better day.
Hey, Dunk… can help me find a part-time job?” Joong asked, his voice quieter than usual. He pushed the food around on his plate but didn’t take another bite just yet.
Dunk raised an eyebrow, pausing mid-bite. “A job? What’s going on?”
Joong sighed, setting down his fork. “Back at my dad’s place, he’d always give me some money when I needed it. But now… it’s different. He would not give me money and I wouldn't ask him either so I gotta figure out how to make my own cash.” He leaned back in his chair, looking frustrated. “I’m not used to this. I don’t even know where to start.”
“I get it. Alright, I know a couple of places that are always hiring. Maybe we can look into something this week.” He gave Joong a reassuring grin. “Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out.”
Joong nodded, feeling a little lighter at the thought. “Thanks"
After they finished their breakfast
“You know what, we don't have school today so we can go today only to find you a job and places might be a little more laid-back today," Dunk said thoughtfully. "How about we head out now?
Joong looked up, surprised by the suggestion. “You think today’s a good day for that?”
“Why not?” Dunk shrugged, standing up and grabbing his jacket. “It’s a good time to hit the streets while things are slower. Plus, we can grab lunch afterward if it all goes well.”
Joong hesitated for a second, then nodded. “Alright, let’s do it. I’m ready.”
With a smile, Dunk grabbed his keys and headed to lock the door. “Good. Let’s get you set up. First stop, job hunting.”
