"Maybe it could be like- a flower, or something?" I suggested as we stumbled over the leaves, struggling to make it across the mud.

"How about we just focus on returning alive for now." Louis smiled bitterly.

After laying the ground rules, Seyra had led all of us in different directions from the cabin. Though, her main rule was that we each had to 'bring something back'. It could be a unique leaf, or an oddly-coloured flower, or a perfect conifer cone, she just said that we needed something to offer to the spirits. So basically, a peace offering. I don't understand ghosts.

I was the one holding the EMF meter, Louis was leading.

The silence after he made his remark was deafening, and I think that it was starting to get to my head. "So..." I attempted to make small talk. "What's your take on, uh..." I scanned my surroundings, and the first thing that caught my eye was a beautiful blue butterfly resting on a vine. "What's your take on butterflies?"

I didn't get a response.

"And this is why I was SO reluctant on travelling with you." My footsteps through the grass grew heavier. "Every day in school, I tried to approach you, I tried to be nice, and all you could ever do was ignore ignore ignore. Wh-"

"Hayley." He tried speaking, but I cut him off. I was too busy ranting.

"-What did I even do? All I've ever done, was study, and keep my head low, and nev-"

"Hayley." He repeated.

"-Never engage in anything fun, and never do anything for myself, because it's always about pleasing everybody else, and it's his opinion, her opinion, blah bl-"

"HAYLEY, STOP WALKING, THERE IS A-"

I shrieked, but I was too late to try and catch myself before I tripped over and plummeted face-first towards the ground.

"-Tree log in your way." He finished, stepping over the tree log and staring down at me, the disappointment clear in his expression.

"Ugh, the bugs..." I murmured as I picked another tick off of my skin and yeeted it into oblivion. Louis snickered from beside me.

After that fun little 'incident (which included me completely embarrassing myself,) I found a big rock to sit on as I tried to brush the dirt off of my clothes with my hand.

"Maybe if you just listened to me once in a blue moon and wore a jacket like everybody else, you wouldn't have to be plucking ticks off of yourself."

"Zip it." I hissed.

A bolt of thunder flashed through the oddly cloudy sky, making the both of us flinch. Why me?

"It's definitely gonna rain." Louis crossed his arms and side-eyed me. "You should've just worn a jacket."

"No, I don't think it's freezing outside, unlike you guys who have been gearing up for an entire snow storm." I huffed.

Lightning striked once more, lighting the sky up in its fury.

Based on the clouds, I was expecting immediate harsh rain, but felt the weight of something draped over my shoulders instead. And then came the immediate harsh rain.

Louis pulled the hood of his jacket over my head, shielding my hair from getting absolutely and utterly soaked.

"Um-" I stammered to pull his jacket off of my body, but he stopped me. "No no, you're gonna catch a cold-"

"Yeah but I don't want you to catch a cold, so you keep it." He declared.

"Besides, I'm already..." He sighed, keeping his gaze fixed on the ground. HE was absolutely and utterly soaked now.

"Uh- Thank you.." I stumbled. "Let's go under that... tree? for now?"

He shrugged. "Can't get worse than this."

I snorted. "You look like a wet puppy."

"Shut up."

We quickly got a move on, sprinting to the tree (to not get further drenched,) when the EMF meter spiked to red for a second, before it quickly reduced back to green.

"Okay, what the hell." I held it up to my face, inspecting the meter. "Yeah, this thing hasn't gone off once. Is it a coincidence that it shoots to red as soon as we move to this area?"

"I think there's something over there, maybe." Louis inquired. "Look." He pushed me by my shoulder and pointed in the distance, to where a most-definitely abandoned something stood.

It was a large building with graffiti covering every flat surface. The walls were crumbling and debris was scattered all over the ground. For some reason, it looked familiar to me.

"Looks like it was victim to a fire." Louis said. "Have any idea what it could've been?"

"Wait." I took a step closer to take a good look, which was pretty hard to do considering the fact that it was nearly storming. I stared for a moment as the gears in my brain twisted and turned, before it finally hit me. I'd seen this place before, on a random website.

"That's Havenwood Sanitarium." I pointed out. "Or... what remains of it, at least."

Louis's silence was a fair reason for me to continue.

"It was a psychiatric facility in 1924. It was known to have intense methods of treating their patients, until there was a gruesome fire in 1936 which caused the death of everyone inside. The building nearly survived, but it was abandoned after that. The fire was untraceable, which was weird, so it coul-"

Louis blinked. "Okay, okay, I have no idea how you know this or what's going on."

"...I like to research." I muttered.

He forcefully snatched the meter out of my hands and waved it around in the direction of the abandoned facility. It beeped to red. "Do you think that the EMF meter could be leading us there?" He glanced at me, waiting for a response.

"Right, Louis, you cool, you chill, but do you really expect me to go in there?"

"Well, Sey put you with me, so, yes."
