CHAPTER ONE

HER 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 erratically left my lips as her fingers dug into the mattress of my bed. The white tile only made her want to drag herself up the walls, the white walls...the white door. She swung her legs as her heart paced rapidly against her chest. Her hair matted against her pounding head, a small frown on her lips.

Whoosh! The door slid open, a nurse came in with a pillow and blankets. "Lainey?" She raised a brow, looking down at the paper in her hands. Lainey nodded eagerly, the nurse set the pillow and blanket down. She huffed with her hands on her hips, "open."

Lainey opened her mouth, parting her lips as she nurse inspected inside. She pulled back with a satisfied hum, "alright." The nurse nodded firmly as she headed her way out.
"Goodnight!" Lainey waved goodbye to the nurse who playfully rolled her eyes, as she patted her pillow down to her comfort.

As the hours went by the only thing Lainey could do was stare at the ceiling. Her fingers fiddled with the loose string from the blanket, the crickets chirped as the sound of wind blowing gently could be heard even through her window that was encaged with metal bars.

She shifted up, hands shoving into her laced bra with a sigh. Her fingers snatched the key from the pad of the bra, smiling to herseld as her feet landed gently on the icy tile. She hovered the key over the key hole, letting out a shaky breath before inserting it. Her hand twisted the key inside and pulled back once she heard the lock, 'click.'

Her hands delicately slid the door open, her head peeped out. Wide eyes glanced to the left...then to the right- clear. She jogged into the empty hallway, the only source of light in there was the moon. Her face cringed at the sound of screams downstairs from other mental hospital patients. She made her way into the library using another key from her bra.

She hastily jogged past several bookshelves before finally getting to the window, she glanced back with clammy palms on the handle. She slammed the window open, glancing out the window; the wind rushed past her face. Lainey looked down at the ledge that glided across the edge of the buildiny, swallowing the tightened lump in her throat.

Lainey shoved herself through the window slowly, feet planted on the ledge. One missed step and she would become human batter on the floor. She let out soft pants as the wind violently shoved against her, her back firm against the wall. Her eyes tried to look down as if it was nature but she refused- keeping them on the moon. With ragged breaths, she moved her body began to move forward- sideways technically.

Lainey's breathe slowly clustered between her dry tongue as her heart was pounding so violently she thought it would break her ribs. The girl placed another step, forwarding her escape as a small laugh escaped her parched lips- Lainey's hair completely tangled and clustered between sweat as her nightgown was drowned between it.

Her body stopped once she hit the corner in which below her would be the alleyway. She gulped, glancing over the edge of the wall to see a small set of ladders that led down to the cement. Lainey turned the corner, her foot suddenly rolled sideways- jerking her body down.

Lainey's breath escaped her lips as one hand grasped the ledge, she groaned with pained whimpers- feeling her ankle throb in an aching sensation. She finally lifted her body upper body up, close enough to the set of ladders. She let out pants as her legs swung towards one of the ladder's bars.
