CHAPTER TWO
_____________________

THE SOUND of the boy rummaging through the aide kit sent shots of anxiety through Lainey's
bones. Her hands clutching the sides of the stool, shoulders tense. The boy glanced up at her for a millisecond before turning back to the box.

"Are you Diego's little brother?" Lainey broke the tense silence, the boy scoffed under his breath with a few curse words. "Little- no. Brother- yes." The girl tilted her head sideways at his answer, puzzled but not questioning any further.

"You don't bite people, right?" She furrowed her brows as the boy looked up at her, his brows knitted in a ridiculed manner. "I don't believe so, no?" She nodded at his answer, her lips pressed in a firm line.

"What's your name?"

Five grumbled, "you ask a lot of questions." His left eye twitched at her remark, "but you still answer them." She gave him a soft smile as she looked down at the boy, waiting.

"Five Hargreeves." Five...? As in the number? She went to say something but he quickly stopped her with his own; "yes, as in the number." Lainey glanced down briefly at Five who was kneeling in front of her.

"I'm assuming it's this ankle," Five was nodding at her one ankle that was now smothered with bruises to soon form. Lainey nodded shyly as Five scrunched his nose. "What the hell were you doing, kicking rocks?" He sarcastically said as he looked up at me.

"I slipped."

"Of course you did," Five clicked his tongue as he inspected the injury. "Sprained, not broken." He rummaged through the box before taking out a bandage to wrap. "Don't put pressure on it," he muttered as he wrapped the bandage around her ankle- his hands holdering her foot. He tied it and pulled his hands away, standing up as he ser the aid kit on the counter

"Thank you." Lainey whispered, almost hesitant to even speak more to the odd boy. Five's shoulders slouched as he held a mug with another coffee serving. He didn't answer, making his way to the refrigerator.

"I'm not a lunatic, by the way..." she remarked as she tugged the end of her sleeves down to cover her cold hands.

"Says the one who was stuck in the hospital," he countered with a cocky smirk on his face. The freezing air from the refrigerator nipped at his nose, looking for something. Lainey averted her eyes to the floor, head hanging low.

"Only a lunatic could crawl out the window from the third floor and slip." He teased as he snatched a sugar bread and closing the refrigerator shut. His back facing her as her eyes widened.

"How did you know that?" She almost stood up but quickly fell back down before moving, shoulders tense as she furrowed her brows. Five pressed his lips together as he sliced the sugar bread with a knife. "I just do."

Lainey was about to speak when the door slammed open to reveal Lila and Diego. Five chuckled, still not facing them. "Took forever, was hoping you two got lost." Diego crossed his arms as Lila snatched the paper bags from him.

"Lainey, lets go." Lila grabbed Lainey's wrist and pulled her up, supporting her as she led them down the hallway.

Diego ran his fingers through his hair, raising a
brow at Five who dipped his bread in coffee and shoved it into his mouth. He gulped some of the dampened bread down, "mm?" Five hummed with a mouthful of food. "Who is that lunatic you brought into our home?"
