The first rays of the morning sunshine crept through the blinds, casting soft, hazy lines across the bed. Ethan was the first of the two to stir, blinking up at the ceiling as the memories of the night before settled over him, vivid and inescapable. He shifted slightly on the bed, feeling the warmth of Jake beside him, and in that moment, the reality of it all hit him like a cold wave.
Jake was still asleep, his face relaxed and peaceful in the early light. Ethan glanced at him, an odd mixture of satisfaction but apprehension bubbling up inside. He couldn't deny that last night had felt different. It had felt like something he hadn't experienced before, something he couldn't brush off so easily. It wasn't rough and quick like usual. Wasn't a 'get in, get out' situation. It was gentle. Calm. And the fact that Jake was still here, sleeping peacefully next to him, was something Ethan wasn't expecting.
As if sensing his thoughts, Jake's eyes fluttered open. For a moment, he looked disoriented, his gaze landing on Ethan before realisation dawned. They locked eyes and the air between them grew thick with unspoken tension.
"Morning," Jake said softly, his voice rough from sleep, though there was a hint of hesitation there too.
Ethan simply nodded in the black haired boys direction, not quite meeting his gaze. He kept quiet. Jake tried and failed to hide his frown.
Jake swallowed thickly, reaching over to the bedside table and grasping his phone in his hands to check the time. It was only 9:30am and it was the weekend so he didn't have anywhere else to rush off to.
His eyes flickered across his notifications and his stomach dropped when realising he had a few texts from Luke. Some of them were just asking where he was and others were seeing if the two of them could talk.
Jake felt awful.
He quickly dropped his phone back on the bedside table so he didn't have to look at it any further, as if that would give him some peace of mind.
An awkward silence settled over them, both of them suddenly hyperaware of the space they shared, of the night they'd just had. Jake sat up slowly, rubbing a hand over his face, as if he were gathering his thoughts. The bedsheets pool at his waist and when he glanced down at his naked body, it was another reminder of what had happened last night.
"So..." he started, breaking the silence but trailing off, uncertain.
Ethan shifted, pulling the blanket up a bit as he let out a low sigh. "What?" he asked in a bored tone.
Jake glanced at him and then back down at his lap. "You okay?" he asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" Ethan asked him, almost like he was putting up a wall already.
"I just meant after last night," Jake said.
"It's not a big deal. Last night just... happened." He didn't know how else to phrase it, didn't want to delve into whatever emotions were simmering beneath the surface.
Jake gave a small nod, glancing away for a moment. "Yeah, it did." He paused, fidgeting with the edge of the blanket. "Are you... okay with that?"
Ethan blinked, caught off guard by the question. He hadn't really thought about how he felt about it, not in a way he could put into words. All he knew was that he hadn't felt like an outsider for once. He hadn't felt alone. And the fact that Jake knew he was sleeping with Ethan and not Alex meant the world to him, but he would never ever say that out loud.
