Evelyn stood on the shoreline, her gaze fixed on the horizon where Lucien’s figure had faded into the mist. The waves lapped gently at her feet, carrying a strange calm that mirrored the emptiness left in her heart. For the first time since arriving in Blackmoor, she felt the haunting presence of Estelle was gone, the air no longer weighed down by sorrow and anger.
As she turned to leave the beach, a sudden chill brushed past her, and she looked back, half-expecting to see Lucien’s face in the water, his gaze filled with longing. But there was only the expanse of the sea, vast and lonely. Evelyn closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the waves, which now seemed to whisper soft words of comfort.
Returning to the village, she felt a strange mixture of peace and sorrow. She knew her time here was over, that the chapter of her life that had been bound to Lucien’s was complete. But as she walked through the streets, the villagers who once looked at her with suspicion now met her with quiet nods of respect, as though sensing the change that had come over Blackmoor.
The old woman who had warned Evelyn before, the one with the knowing gaze, approached her at the village square, her expression softened. “You did it, didn’t you?” she whispered, her voice filled with awe. “You freed him.”
Evelyn nodded, the weight of it settling into her heart. “I loved him, even if we could never truly be together.”
The woman placed a hand on Evelyn’s shoulder, a silent acknowledgment of her sacrifice. “Not all love is meant to last in life, child. Some love is bound to the spaces between worlds.”
