This is inspired by the wonderful Dodie Clark's song, Pas de Deux.
-
For his birthday, all Luke wanted was en Pointe shoes and a year-long subscription to look magazine. At least, that's all he asked for. Really, what he wanted was someone to fill his heart. Make him feel like he belonged, obviously, he didn't ask his mother for that.
But, as he enters the school with his new birthday presents under his arm and many happy birthday wishes being sent his way, he finds a small pink note stuck to the back of his locker, reading 'Happy Birthday Princess. Turn around <3'. Even as he turns, he knows who would be stood there. His basically non-existent boyfriend Ashton, glasses glinting in the light of the corridor, he holds up a bouquet of pink roses. And Luke tries not to cry as he launches into a hug.
"Come with me," Ashton whispers to him through their embrace. "Let's have an adventure."
So they do. Ashton takes his hand and Luke runs to keep up with him as they slip back through the school gates. The pair arrives at a small riverbank, Ashton steps over easily but Luke is cautious, so Ashton picks him up, spinning him around easily and placing him down.
Their teeth clash with smiles as they kiss. And Luke wouldn't want to be anywhere else at that moment.
-
Luke has been spending a lot of time in the studio, practising his dancing, and Ashton has recognized this.
"You spend more time in that studio than you do with me! How do I know you're not cheating on me? Meeting up with someone while I think you're off dancing! Who is it?"
There were tears streaming down Luke's pale cheeks as he shouts back equally as loud, telling him that there was no one else.
"I don't want you to dance. I want you to spend time with me."
"Because you did a great job of spending time with me when you disappeared for three months, you didn't even come to my birthday party! You definitely win boyfriend of the year!" Luke regrets it as soon as it comes out of his mouth, because before he could say 'pas de deux' he is backed up against the wall, Ashton's face mere centimetres away from his own.
"I refuse to let you dance."
That did it. Luke didn't dance for four years.
Him and Ashton now live in a small apartment, Luke is wary, he never leaves his phone alone in a room and hides his dancing clothes in the back of his closet. He couldn't leave the apartment without Ashton, but he tries to stay positive, convincing himself its still love. No matter how much it hurt him not to be dancing.
But, there is still hope. Ashton has left the apartment, not telling Luke where he's gone. So, Luke did the same. He pulled out the dusty, satin pink bag from the closet, and, laced with guilt, he went back to the studio.
-
He pushes open the door that protests in creaking, breaking the anxious silence. But, as he slips into his ballet shoes, he knows that this is where he belongs.
-
He feels guilty even looking at Ashton, knowing that he is sneaking out every week to go back to the studio. And to see Michael, the boy with brightly coloured hair, who can't dance and doesn't wear glasses, but he loves to eat cake and watch Luke perform a pas de deux.
Luke is decided; he leaves a note for Ashton. A sweet note written on the same pink parchment that had brought them together on his birthday, scented like roses. He takes his belongings, changes his phone number, and moves in with Michael.
-
Michael lifted Luke up and over the stream; Luke wrapped his legs around Michael's waist as they kissed. And in that moment, he knew that that was where he belonged.
He's walking on rivers
He lifts him above.
They're full of belonging,
And so full of love.-
I might continue this into a chaptered fic if it gets a positive reaction.
