Dad sits next to me in one of the chairs close by the pool that an excited Tyson is swimming in. He's a natural at it, already swimming in the five-foot area at his five-foot-four height. Dad and I watch him close, neither of us in the proper clothing to get in the water with him.
'Why do you want to tell him so bad?' Dad questions as he reaches in the cooler in between us for a cold soda. After accepting the one he holds out to me I pop open the lid and take a sip before answering.
'I know it's going to scare him,' I say as my attention never leaves my younger brother, 'but I don't have much time left. If he's fully prepared by the time it happens, he won't be so devastated by it.'
Dad goes quiet as he takes a long drink of his soda. I'm just about to drink some of my own when he decides to speak again.
'Just be careful with how you tell him,' he reaches for my free hand and offers a gentle squeeze. I nod in silence and go back to my soda, still keeping my focus on Tyson, who's now cannonballing into the pool and swimming to the other side.Later that night, as I'm getting ready for bed I forget about Tyson being roommates with me until he runs into the room, in his pajamas, already rambling about me and why he's apparently 'so happy' for me. I don't question why that is, since I haven't done anything worth him being proud of me. I guess it just goes back to Tyson craving to be close to me.
We climb in bed, and I wrap my arms around him in comfort. He giggles when I kiss him on his cheek, turning his head to return the favor to mine. After that he turns away from me again and goes right to sleep with no issues. I'm unable to sleep, so I opt to watch my younger brother in his peaceful slumber.
